Say You Shot a Ghost...

<... and you hit a part that isn't the sphere/core in the middle. Does the Ghost feel pain? Is it effectively injured? Does it just get disoriented from the initial shot? I realize that if you stab a Ghost in the eye, you'll kill it. I assume this is due to the core housing the orb of Light that a Ghost actually is. I'm just curious how close you could get to the core without actually harming that orb of Light. Not only that, but I believe this information is necessary in understanding the Traveler, the Pyramids, and possibly the Winnower itself if it takes up a vessel or shell of some kind. EDIT - guys I'm just trying to gauge whether the Traveler was actually hurt during the Red War and if the broken shell actually matters in its recovery.>

  • Unrelated question: How do Ghosts change shells? Like, do they put them on like we do with clothes or do they transfer their consciousness from one shell to another?

  • If every Ghost became a bucket Ghost we wouldn’t need to ask these questions. Moon buckets seem like the best protection.

      • Bit of a masochist aren't we? I mean I guess you have a point... where would we be in our scientific advancements if we never indulged in the torture of living things? All joking aside, I genuinely feel bad for the drifters ghost. He treats her like garbage and after seeing such treatment I've decided to start a ghost protection agency for mistreated and battered ghosts... So I'm afraid that if you take action to harm these intelligent beings, be it for science or otherwise, I will be forced to introduce you to the business end of le monarque. Ye be warned.

        • I’ve been wondering something similar. How much force does it take to kill a Ghost, and how much would only knock it out? Temptations Hook shows that a Ghost gets knocked out by a Lightning Strike, and Sagira gets shot and is only put to sleep. But if a knife can kill one, then how much force is needed? What are a Ghost’s limits?

        • Ghosts do feel pain, as observed on a strike when helping Failsafe recover some of the ship. Their electrical sensors may fry, which does hurt. However, an ant falling from a cliff and a person are two different levels of pain. You could throw a ghost off the courtyard at the tower and I think it'd still be fine, relatively. Its lightweight design and structured frame let it experience physical damage in a different way.

          • In the strike Exodus Crash if you let an overload shank get near the ghost you need to protect in the beginning part he sccreams in agony or atleast says ow. So I think it does feel pain BUT I think its more effective with arc energy. So if you ever want to torture a ghost thats the way to go

          • I dont think Ghost shells being hit would comparable at all to the Travelers shell which has been called the Travelers "flesh" in dreams of Alpha lupi. Ghost shells are fashioned or created, not a part of them.

            • your post made me think of something; the Rifleman shot Sundance, and made Cayde "mortal". When we die in open world, ads will be shooting at our ghost constantly, to no avail. Something to ponder

Could be wrong but normally a ghost cant die unless the light cant connect with it and it is destroyed. Also something that would drain the light like weapons of sorrows and other hive tools. If a ghost is lets say shot or damaged by something that doesnt cut the connection with the light it will just get damaged but can be repaired. Like sagira and how her shell was damaged but was brought back. So in the travelers case its damaged and cant do much but is still there and healing. i do believe its power could be passed on though maybe.

                      • Ghosts have to be very difficult to kill. Otherwise, the Crucible would be an impossibility. You drop something big like a fist of panic or a nova bomb on a Ghost that's reviving its Guardian, and that Guardian is permanently dead.

Reminds me of how a stray shot from a Vex hit and knocked out Sagira back in the Curse of Osiris. Her eye lens was cracked and the rest of her outer shell was still intact and held together, and even so Osiris already had some sort of machine waiting at his disciples’ station in the EDZ to kinda phase her into another ghost shell. I guess that they can still kinda come back (in one way or another) so long as their main core casing isn’t completely destroyed or breached, though whether it can be from another ghost or from a deliberate method like Osiris’ is the real question.

                          • During the nessus strike as we defend the arc plate our ghost cries out in pain. Whether or not this is a synthetic pain (ie he actually feels what we would call pain) or a defensive process (no physical pain but a mocked response that reflects some defensive programming to keep his hardware safe) is up for debate.

I’ve wondered about this too. Ghosts have been shown feeling pain, but only when having their Light stripped. We’ve seen them take damage, sometimes crippling the Shell like Sai Mota’s Ghost or knocking them out like Sagira, but we don’t have any examples of them feeling pain from having their Shells damaged. Paola’s Death was faked, but I think it’s worth noting that in the fake recording she screamed when she was stabbed in the eye. Perhaps that means it is painful, or perhaps it was supposed to be a cry of shock/fear. Edit: The Nessus strike has been mentioned and I see you countered with the whole Shell and core being damaged. So are you just ignoring the core and wondering if the decorative triangle bits feel pain or not?

                          • We know from the exodus strike that they do feel pain. I think the thing that gets confusing is how to kill them. Lore goes back and forth from ghosts being killed by anything to only being killed by darkness or darkness infused objects like a thron dagger.
