Why are people saying there is no story?

Ok, I keep hearing "no story" from some people. There has to be a story for this game to be based off of, or it would be no better than angry birds (no story, there's a real no story game). Maybe those who don't think there is a story mean "there's not a deep elaborate storyline..." Or something to that effect. Keep in mind this is a fledgling scifi universe. Star Wars also started out with neigh sayers. I'd (honestly) like to understand what you mean, if your a believer this game has no story. Here is the story in case you missed it - Many generations ago (shortly after present day), humanity discovered a gigantic white sphere hovering above Mars in the process of terraforming the planet. The discovery of "the Traveler", as humans called it, ignited a Golden Age of technology and exploration for humanity. Initially the Traveler settled on Mars, where it shared its knowledge and technology with humanity, and a city grew around it. With the assistance of the Traveler and its enigmatic technology, humanity tripled its lifespan, terraformed planets and moons, and expanded its civilization beyond Earth and throughout much of the solar system. The Golden Age would last for centuries, but human civilization fell victim to a cataclysm of extraordinary magnitude, known as the Collapse. A malicious entity known as The Darkness, an ancient enemy of the Traveler, suddenly struck, destroying most of humanity's interplanetary empire. Few managed to survive the devastation. Forced to withdraw to Earth, mankind's homeworld, the embattled Traveler made its final stand, where it sacrificed itself to save the remnants of humanity. The sphere now hovers over Earth, silent, dormant, and crippled, while those who survived united to build The City beneath it, establishing the last bastion of civilization in the solar system. A powerful defensive aura remains projected over the City by the Traveler. The City has come under attack throughout the years, mysterious alien species probing its defenses for weaknesses. You are one of an army of warriors known as Guardians that call the City home, individuals that have taken a stand to reclaim what has been taken from us. Guardians have harnessed the Traveler's energy to create powerful abilities that allow them powerful offensive attacks, defensive counters, and increased mobility. Guardians seek to uncover the mysteries of humanity's downfall and reclaim what has been taken from them. These exploits lead them to rediscover and reclaim old worlds, once part of mankind's civilization but now occupied by deadly extraterrestrial species and threatened by the return of the Darkness. The Guardians are all that stand between the dark forces that seek to destroy civilization and those who take refuge within the City. It is their duty to rebuild from the ashes of defeat, to ignite the once great flame of human civilization, and be the light that shines through the darkness. Their failure would mean the destruction of the human race. --------------- Now, as we play the game we are discovering more of the story. Our character is creating the continuation of the story. It's a mystery adventure, imho. So Destiny clearly has a story. Rebuttal?

  • There is also a lot of Implied story. I good example is "Have you Heard of the Black Garden" ... "We've heard the legends." As players we don't know diddly (without reading Grimoire cards etc) but that is not our characters. Time passes between missions, we travel between places, there is an entire story behind the time that you actually aren't seeing while you are playing. There is plenty of argument that I can forsee being made for, "that doesn't happen while I play" but frankly You're character has been told things, or has found out things. Think of what they know of the world is the sum of what you know. If you ask about things and search things out that is your character in a way doing the same thing. If you don't, well, you are doing exactly what so many people complain they had to do. They do what they are told and go kill things. There's a lot of that in the real world too. How many of you fully understand the health insurance you signed up for at you job. I bet its less than 50% know the ins and outs of its handling. But you went ahead and did it anyways, because you needed to. Its the same in Destiny, you are told you need to do this things and you do them. You either blindly follow, or go and try to find out things. Now whether or not lore is "lazy" story telling or "brilliant" story telling depends entirely on the person, and the content. There is truly a wealth of GREAT information in the Grimoire Cards, and Game, be it the items, or things people say. But not everyone wants to dig, so the unsurprising problem is that many will therefore see no story. Darksouls has the same problem. There is going to be more story for sure, and I admit the game does feel often disjointed. But if you can fill in the time between missions for yourself, there is a full story in the game. I agree with the idea that It also feels like an introduction to the world. With expansions/sequels there is going to be a lot more story for sure.

  • The LORE is amazing. Destiny has a great backstory and I hope Bungie implements more of it. However, the story in the game (plot, writing, narrative) is extremely lackluster

  • What you've listed is backstory, lore, the history, and Destiny has some very rich and fascinating lore. A story is a sequence of events consisting of a beginning, middle, and end. Destiny has a clear beginning, but where is the middle? Where is the end? There are so many things that Ghost and The Speaker state early on that are never answered. Basic things like, "Why am I alive?" which should by all means be one of the first questions answered. What we have is the framework of a story, but that's it. No flesh. No answers to any of the questions the game throws at us.

  • I have no problem with the lore. It's the actual plot line that is nonexistent. It's non-coherent, it's boring, and it's filled with incomprehensible exposition dumps before missions. The world Bungie has crafted is quite fantastic, it's just that the core story feels incomplete. It's also filled with half-assed writing. "I don't even have enough time to explain why I don't have time to explain." Bungie needs to bring their game on for the dlc, and deliver a better narrative than anything that was in the actual game.

I really do wish there was an actual story in this. I mean, the lore is great. Especially that part with the Cabal having the ability to launch a moon into a planet, why wasn't that in the game? It's just that I think the reason why we got this was because after Staten left, Bungie, for whatever reason, decided to scrap the original story. I mean, why? It sounds so much better than the one we got and the Speaker actually has a point in the game. Now, he's just here to say "I could tell you all this epic stuff, but I won't."

Here's the story... You are dead. You are revived by Guilty Spark. Find a ship. Find the Tower. Listen to the Speaker explain nothing about the Darkness. Fight aliens. Let Guilty Spark scan stuff. Fight aliens. Let Guilty Spark scan stuff. Fight aliens. Let Guilty Spark scan stuff. Fight aliens. Listen to a stranger talk about how's there's more aliens and not explain where she came from. Fight aliens. Meet the Queen of the Awoken. Where you should've came from if you were an Awoken. Fight aliens. Fight aliens. Let Guilty Spark scan stuff. Fight aliens. Listen to a pep rally hosted by the Speaker while the Stranger hands you a useless gun.

    • Thanks everyone. I think I understand what many have been saying about "no story" now. I can agree with the points made. Yes, the background "story" is the Destiny "lore." And I can see where, for example, game play in Halo was the unfolding of the story, whereas in Destiny we keep (if you will) "rereading" the first chapter of a story, so the story isn't progressing. The cards add info and questions, but no game play advances the story line or gives answers. Understood now.

      • From my own viewpoint of the this subject, the issue lies that there are so few cutscenes that are normally use to convey story in videogames and in game dialogues are lost in the action. Another thing is that in a 3 act structure, Destiny ends in the first act when the game is just doing introductions. It has at least dealt with part of the Vex but for the most part the game hints that a massive war against every enemy faction is coming but that content is not here yet. We need to wait for expansiones and other events that Bungie has planned for the next 6 years. But gamers and most of the generation z and millenial generation are impatient, they need everything now so they can complete now and move on with the next new thing.

      • Thats the very first cutscene. The rest of the game can be summarized as this. Kill bad guys, even if no one explains a shit. Seriously? if someone revived me like tgat and didnt bother to explain the current events, how humans actually lost and just ended up being one city alive, id be -blam!-ing pissed off and not help anyone. Specially that spealer that changes topics when you need some explanation. He sounds like a -blam!-ing con artist taking advantage of the traveller situation.

The in-game story is sketchy at best. It would have been nice to cover a few things like where your character came from, your back story and some clues about what will be coming next (as far as things that need to be solved or figured out). The Speaker should explain a few things about the Darkness and give clues about what will be coming next. Let us walk around the city a bit. Maybe put some of the grimoire stuff in cut scenes also? Make the Ghost a bit more chatty/witty like in the game release video.

        • Because in-game, it is barely present. No cutscenes no significant dialogue. All the awesome stuff is in Grimoir, which many many many people (most) don't feel like making a Bungie account just to figure out he story for a game.

        • The story in Destiny is horribly conveyed to the point where you can make the argument that it is non existent. The sad part is the interesting parts of the story are hidden behind grimmore cards.

        • The reason people say there isn't a story is cause everything you just said about the story happened in the first cut scene with the only difference being your explanation was longer. As for that story you say we "discover" well.. i would explain that part but i would just be saying what quicksilver0075 said. so yes Destiny does have a story but its blunt and all of it takes place in the first cut scene.

        • Storytelling is what lacks. The story itself is quite original, but grimoire cards happened.

            • Sure, this does all sound great but that story is literally the set up to the game itself. We knew most of this from trailers and vidocs from nearly two years ago. It really makes you wonder and anxious to know more but it seems like there isn't much more after that. Any real conflict in Destiny occurs and ends with each mission, making it seem to have no significance at all.

              • That's lore, not story. The story of Destiny is go there, shoot that and defend this. What little explanation is given is all too often either very short or nonsensical. Now that being said Destiny has a lot of lore and it is often quite good. Unfortunately very little of it ties into the game itself and is accessed on this website, not in-game.
