What Skills Are Required For Creating Video Games?

Let's say that Bungie inspires people of all ages to pursue a career in video games.. How would that inspired person even begin that path to glory? Let's also say that this inspired person has spent a lot of time gaming.. (your-average-video-game-junkie). I have no clue where this thread belongs. Fellow gamers, do you dream of the perfect video game? How long have you had this dream and what's your vision. I envision an epic, set in Edo Japan. Fighting enemies require you to out-combo the other warrior using on screen buttons.. Number of hits taken before death is determined by your difficulty settings (3Easy, 2Hard, 1Untouchable). Join the shogunate in times of War.

  • the number 1 piece of advice I'd give you, is specialize. If you're anything like me, you want to it all--dabble in all aspects of development. But what a lot of industry people are saying nowadays is that studios, since they hire many people, is that they're not looking for a jack of all trades--they're looking for that one guy who's skills focus on one specific area. (modelling, animation, texturing, level design, etc.) Credibility: I am a 2nd year Game Development student with professors from all around the industry, and they all hammer home the same point.

Like many a nerd before you, your path is simple. Apply to Full Sail University, graduate with $120,000 in student loan debt, and realize that there are no jobs for you in a highly competitive and risky job market. Become a Starbucks barista out of desperation and wallow in your sadness as you struggle to make $680 monthly loan repayments. You try to go to bankruptcy, but you find that student loan debt can not be discharged. You wallow in more sadness, have your wages garnished, and finally commit suicide with your father's revolver in your family basement.

      • Depends on what area of game development you want to be involved in, Art/design, Programming, Writing, etc. etc. each requires their own skills.
