Six years later, spectating my own death while casting Rift never stops feeling bad.

This game has gotten juuust a little more intense than when it dropped in 2017, in so many of the best ways. But Warlock Rift really hasn't kept up. It basically hasn't improved at all besides some lame, passive blobs that now spawn (with some builds). Hunters end their snappy Class Ability (literally) in a different place, bristling with one buff or another. Titans duck low and quickly pop a strong physical barrier + buffs. Warlocks hit 'em with the spirit fingers/jazz hands.. to drop a number puddle. In any content above screensaver difficulty: you're in for a bad time. Hopefully that slow heal is enough to cover damage taken during your protracted performance. Unless you've got Empowering Rift on, which will often end in your death outright, unless you pop Rift out back and around the corner. I don't know the solution but this ability was never very cool, and is now aging quite badly. Bungie has the talent -- please consider pointing it in this direction. Thanks for reading

      • Skill issue? Sounds to me like you’re using rift wrong. It’s not a get-out-of-jail free card and neither are the other class abilities, to an extent. If you’re trying to cast your class ability in the middle of a fight, you’re gonna die. If you place them strategically, they’re incredibly strong.

        Warlock rift is about starting an engagement from a position of strength. Within that role, it excels. Try and panic with it, you're gonna die. Repeatedly.

      • It is probably because rift isnt designed to be used while being shot at. Its made to setup a position and give you an advantage. You can see how harder it is to kill a warlock that used icarus dash skating to set up his rift at the choke point. Because rift makes gunfights easier for you and your whole team (not having to wait to regen...taking more bullets to die) Hunters can roll around and survive. Yes. But they cant peek again. Titans can put their barricade while taking damage yes. But often they die while doing so. And when they dont they are low hp behind so its easy to push them. But they dont complain because their ability is worthless when used at the wrong place. Like a hunter dodging behind a wall...whats the point its not what it is made for. Same for rift its not meant to be used while being shot at.

      • Cast speed is very slow, with little to no damage reduction during casting. They need to either increase cast speed or make the shield instantly full instead of building over time.

        • I only run warlock and for the last several seasons have been running the Vesper of radius build so I would disagree that rifts themself need any tuning. What should be changed is the amount of time needed to place a rift because it is way too long. Currently you can land at a bosses back and place your rift but it won't work because he has time to turn around, see you and stomp before your rift goes through the animation. The second I would like is to be able to place the rift while in the air which would bring you to the ground, kind of like Phoenix dive.

          Rifts do seem like they could be cooler. As someone that only plays a hunter sometimes I feel like I can "appreciate" the rifts more than warlocks on my team can. A lot of times they end up looking like the death puddle from the marathon commercial. They're also one of those things that when its time for them to be good or something to be good with them the fact that they usually aren't all that great means they turn out over buffed and sometimes annoying rather than more useful. Whatever they would get I hope its something that increases its usefulness or possibly survivability, but not necessarily something that makes warlocks more "powerful" so that it doesn't end up with titan overdelivery issues.

        • Funny, because all I ever hear when running raids is "we need more 'locks running rift." I got so tired of the rift/well demands that I stopped playing my Warlock altogether.

          • As a warlock main uses aeons in all pvp activities I sincerely think you have to be using it wrong. Would I love a buff of any kind? Heck yeah, would it make it borderline broken? Big chance that's a yes too.

          • Not intended to save you. Use it for engagement from full health for better use as a healing spot. The fact you still use it to stop the onslaught and still fail, are you going to change your ways? Try it when you know the swarm is coming, that way you are out of animation and not locked.

            Honestly why not give it the same treatment as Titan Barrier and have it damage enemies that walk into it. I've always thought Warlocks were meant to be the zone control mages, so why doesn't their rift work similarly to Witherhoard? If not then simply unify the animations, making both rifts use the Empowering rift animation (One it's cooler looking & two your warlock ducks when casting it) along with speeding up the cast animation so we aren't locked into it.

            • Rift is definitely the weakest of the three class abilities (at base, if you add arc souls/void souls/other modifications it becomes better than a basic dodge, I’d argue) but not by much. It requires premeditation to use effectively and that makes it much less flexible than the other two class abilities. Only use it when you are either at low health and [b]safely[/b] behind cover (far from doors/paths to you to avoid grenades and not being actively pursued) or use at the entrance of a lane to continuously peek so you win most 1v1s that do not include a sniper insta killing you. If you have arc or void souls, I will often use it a bit behind me, safely out of sight of players, so I can get the soul and if I’m weak I can fall back to my rift (and not have to do the whole cast animation), which often gives players a false sense of security rushing me as they do not know I have a rift.

            • Even when the rift is being placed behind cover in a gm grenade will kill you and there is not a thing you can do ... atleast let us cancel the rift so we can move
