Are Dredgens Evil?

I've been trying to find answers for this on Google but the only relevant thing that comes up is a reddit post that isnt too helpful The wiki states that dredgens often don't follow rules in pvp rounds of crucible and gambit and take pleasure in killing other guardians, but then a couple people irl have said that those dredgens are only a few. And i also know wiki isn't super accurate for everything I know the point of being a dredgen/joining the Shadows of Yor is to become as close to Dredgen Yor as possible without getting corrupted, but what does that specifically entail? Also why does Drifter give out the Dredgen title if he's no longer associated with the Shadows of Yor? What does being a Dredgen mean lore wise? And does it mean you're evil?

so many who replied left out an important piece of info. Dredgen Yor was teaching a lesson. shins master couldn't kill Yor with only light. he pushed shin to use both light and dark. if you take a look at the teachings of the Force from star wars its nearly identical. the only reason why Bain, Revan, and Anakin was so powerful was because they used both the light and dark. they were balanced. which in truth the light side actually does not exsist. only the dark is real. its from old Rakka teachings. back to the answer, we as the guardian are possibly the only Guardian that is more powerful then both the traveler and the black fleet combined as we are now balanced. not only light, not only dark....both. this has been hinted at since red war. so... no, Dredgens are not evil.
The whole point of the existence of the Shadows of Yor is that Shin Malphur realized that his hatred of Dredgen Yor for killing his mentor made his abilities in the Light more powerful (the first Golden Gun). So he saw a path to making the Light even more powerful....but (because of what happened to Dredgen Yor) there needed to be a means to PRUNE those people who were corrupted by the Darkness and gave into the seductive pursuit of power for its own sake. Long story short, the Shadows of Yor, Gambit, and the Reputation of Shin Malphur are all an elaborate STING operation. To use The Darkness as a means to make Lightbearers more powerful....while culling those who are unworthy and cannot handle the darkenss without being corrupted by it. IOW, Shin Malphur IS A DREDGEN...and is the Enforcer of the Shadows of Yor where it comes to culling the corrupt within their own ranks. While The Drifter and Gambit is the sting whereby the corrupt are given enough rope with which to hang themselves, and reveal that they've been corrupted. So the answer is that some Dredgens are evil. Some are not. But all are adherents to a rough form of sword logic. Where physical strength is not what is being selected for...but instead the MORAL and emotionla srength to not be corrupted by proximity to the Darkness. Make Sense? If not, think of it this way. Its as if in Star Wars you had an agreement by Jedi and Sith to use the Dark Side to make the Light Side of the Force more powerful by using the whole of The Force. But that a Jedi Master would police the Sith, and destroy those who were too corrupted and strayed too far down the path to corruption and violence. Shin Malphur is that Jedi Master.... But he isn't trying to destroy the Darkness. He's just culling those too weak to use it without becoming a slave to its corrupting influence.
It's kinda difficult The original dredgens were made by Shin malphur and his closest allies to lure out Guardians who would use the light for evil and eventually kill em all in one go The dredgens at their core are not evil, but the ones that weren't the original few were Unfortunately the dredgens are kinda extinct now. I didn't like how the story developed but there nothing you can do
Drifter gave out dredgen titles cuz he was working with Shin. He would give Guardians who looked like they were secretly dangerous the title so that eventually shin could kill them. At least that's what I understand
• I always looked at it as being open to the idea as there is more that we don't know and a fine balance to strike to get thingd just right. To be able to sit in the grey if our man Shin believes we can do it...
Or should I say Dredgen Vale?
then why not right?

Depends those who are in on the purpose of the dredgens arent evil. Then theres those who arent in on the true purpose and will most likely fall to the whispers of the dark, those are the evil ones. The reason that drifter gives the dredgen title away is most likely to pokefun at the real dredgens. This is what i recall but i could be wrong.

          • Dredgens were the original Rogue Lightbearers before the power of Stasis came along. They walk that thin line between Light and Dark. They use both powers for every need they have. They welcome the Darkness and see it as just another tool against the powers that be. Not evil. At all.

          • To answer your other questions. Becoming a Dredgen now and those who formed "The Shadows of Yor" involve very different processes. The original "Shadows of Yor" aimed to be corrupted by darkness but develop control over their corruption. Dredgens from Gambit are users of dark energies and are named such because of this. There are characters in the Destiny universe who have subjected themselves to corruption with the aim to create a 'balance'. Shin Malfur is the prime example. Being a Dredgen in game means you're a user of dark energies within Drifter's Gambit games. There are other characters who have the title Dredgen and it has a different connotation. Being a Dredgen does not make you evil.

          • The term "Dredgen" started out from Dredgen Yor, who was a guardian corrupted by the hive. He wasn't specifically evil and there is an element within his character after being corrupted that could be seen as him appealing for his death so that his corruption could be cleansed. However, he performed a series of dark/questionable actions. The Vanguard not wanting his history to be replicated have tried to keep knowledge of Yor classified. A small group of individuals discovered the truth about Yor and wanted to follow in his steps, forming " The Shadows of Yor". The Drifter at that time joined their ranks in an effort to acquire further skills and abilities suiting his survivalist attitude. Eventually becoming disenfranchised with the group, he broke away and stopped referring to himself as "Dredgen Hope". Some time later The Drifter started using Gambit as a means to collect dark taken energies. Because the term 'Dredgen' reflects those who are users of darkness Drifter started gifting the title of Dredgen to those who greatly contributed to his Gambit games. In part, he used the gifting of this title as a way of mocking his former "Shadows of Yor" companions.

No, dredgens arent evil. But they dont follow the rules of the city. Mostly because they want to avoid having another dredgen yor. Following the path of yor is dangerous, and some can...fall into the wrong way of the path of yor. The drifter just gives the title to piss them off.
