I need to rant. Now.

And I understand that some of you may be triggered on the small, teeny tiny thing I'm going rant about. So if you give no shits about school and tests, get out. Good? Good. Firstly, let me just say that I was mostly okay with the education system I've gone through from 2005 to now. Now, my hope for my school grades is at an all-time low in quite a while. "But Venom, what kind of BS have you been through that only now pisses you off?" Well, I'm glad you asked, dear reader. My problem is, as stated above, with tests. "But Venom, what about the tests, you fuсk?" Tests that are fuсking homework. More commonly known as projects. About subjects I bet nobody gives two shits about, such as certain religions, sciences, etc. And I've been patient with my teachers, even through some of the absolutely BS times, but this has gone too far. I don't mind tests, but when you merge my archnemesis that is homework into the test category, all Hell breaks loose. It was this special category of assignments that nearly devastated my grades several years ago. "But Venom, perhaps the subject your project's about is important." Really? Tell me that you know what Transcendentalism even is without looking it up, who founded it, and that it still bears relevance in the modern world. Anybody? No? Then don't even try arguing that point. "But Venom, you're just being a bitch about doing homework. We all have to do it, like it or not." I do homework. But this damn project, and others like it, just waste even more of my time, beating the living shit out of a horse that's been dead since the Civil War (as Transcendentalism was born in American Romanticism, active before the War). And let's be honest: Wouldn't you be upfront with your boss if you were super pissed about it, too? "But Venom, we don't give a shit about your feelings." I'm posting this to get it out of my system safely, not for your damn opinions on my life because I'm a proclaimed attention-seeking whore. So please, with all this being said, discuss what you want about this. TL;DR: I'm pissed about doing a project in my own time about a subject that I won't even give two shits about outside of school.

  • Let me make this short. School has been designed to sculpt the youth of America become good little round pegs to fit into good little round holes. If you can't get the job done you get to go where all the square pegs go. To prison or into the mental health system because square pegs don't make money, they cost money. So they put you into a machine that makes money from square pegs. Good luck out there, whatever you are, round or square because I can explain to you that in my line of work, I constantly am asked to do things that are a waste of my time and I am not encouraged to get "pissed off" and say anything at all to my boss. I have been told to just do whatever they tell me and not voice my opinion. Welcome to freedom.

Not to be argumentative, but I don't think you're considering everything. The subject matter of the project isn't really the point. Yes, ideally the teacher would make it about something useful in daily life. But learning about some obscure religion or some dead dude isn't really what they're trying to teach you with an at home project. They're trying to teach you critical thinking by making you research, comprehension by making you compile and re transmit what you researched, communication by making you present your findings in a manner that teaches other people, and your ability to work independently while doing all this (unless it's a group project, of course. then you're being taught to work as a team). And all of these skills are very important in the "real world". That's why these projects will be a part of your education all the way through college.

          • Just wait until college when you get to enjoy 2-5 hours a day of studying and doing homework. When you have a class in which a research paper makes up the entire semester's grade, you'll look back and miss that easy stuff.

          • High school is merely created to keep children out of the workforce. It serves no useless purpose whatsoever.

          • isnt it great to spend 13 years of your life (some might say the 13 most important years) getting the creativity and revolutionary thoughts beat out of you? and in return, they beat you into a conformist submission with degrading topics and failing you for not memorizing exactly what they say and ultimately believing their opinion with no room for opposition. It really prepares you for our conformist society of liberals and sjws, while encouraging creativity when it applies to their belief. Some would say the king-and-servant society has long passed, but i say it has merely disguised itself better.

              • I had a class where we would read a lot of old ass texts. I'm talking like the first recorded story ever. It seems useless, but the act of analyzing and learning about the text actually taught me a lot of critical thinking skills. Just keep an open mind dude, you might not care about the subject but you might learn something else along the way

              • We only made projects on stuff that was at least semi relevant (to the current subject). At least. I'd say it's fine if it was relevant to... anything. But now that you have my attention on the subject...
what is that anyway?
• Sorry man, but this isn't new or unique. It's no groundbreaking insight in how schooling sucks and should be improved. Almost every kid has these feelings at a certain point, and that's because they (and you) are completely missing the point. The idea is not to get you to become an expert on something like transcendentalism or even care about it in the slightest. Your teacher is not trying to get you to retain information on the topic and use it in your later life. The point is for you to learn how to do research. How to critically asses information, gather insights from multiple sources, combine it and turn the essence of your findings into a presentable project. It's to foster your reading comprehension, your research skills and your ability to compile, analyze and communicate your insights to others. To get you to branch out and become acquainted with topics you otherwise would never encounter. TL;DR: they're not trying to teach you about a random and pointless topic like transcendentalism. They're trying to teach you skills which you might very well need throughout the rest of your education and / or career.

The tests I take I get college credit for. Quit whining. You only say you get nothing from your work because you're shortsighted and lazy. If you can't pull anything from it, that's your own damn fault. Sure, I've had classes that are genuinely useless, but a project on transcendentalism? You really can't glean anything of use from it? You make me sick.

                      • My gripe with school is that most of all tests are tests of memory not acquired knowledge that can be put to use in a certain circumstance.

                        • While i completely agree with working on stuff you will never use (looking at you math) it is to produce rounded individuals until specialization (post generals). It is not easy to throw hundreds of years worth of information into someone without cutting corners either. We have to have a standard atleast for the sake of competition.
