Not to be argumentative, but I don't think you're considering everything. The subject matter of the project isn't really the point. Yes, ideally the teacher would make it about something useful in daily life. But learning about some obscure religion or some dead dude isn't really what they're trying to teach you with an at home project. They're trying to teach you critical thinking by making you research, comprehension by making you compile and re transmit what you researched, communication by making you present your findings in a manner that teaches other people, and your ability to work independently while doing all this (unless it's a group project, of course. then you're being taught to work as a team). And all of these skills are very important in the "real world". That's why these projects will be a part of your education all the way through college.

  • it is very difficult to be "comprehensive" and "critically thinking" when the subject is just plain as day "heres the answer". Making the subject something highly controversial (like the gay marriage supreme court case i wrote on for an essay) makes for a better level of comprehension, where the writer must do research far and wide (not literally anymore) to gain a solid perspective of the objective choice. If more projects were cutting edge tech or highly controversial (or at least mildly controversial, not the "prove this well known fact that not even stupid people debate" so many projects encompass) then we would see a much more intellectual report/project. I think what OP is getting at is the subjects are too stupidly easy to work on for any amount of time. Itd be like proving that you show up for class every day which is such a stupid project that the effort required is minimal and therefore the project will just look bad.

  • You know what's most important in the real world? Not what you mentioned. But... Clay. Definitely clay.
