Why do you think Legendary Shards lost their value?

I'd like to hear y'all's thoughts about this, because I think there are a number of different causes for their removal from the game, but I want to know what you guys think the biggest reason is.

To start with the obvious, in-game Resources are intended to reward those who put in the time earning them while simultaneously putting a realistic limit on how quickly they can be earned and thus how quickly they can be spent. The Legendary Shard economy has become functionally impossible to balance as it is an uncapped currency that has seen multiple instances of infinite Resource exploits over the years. Any attempt to raise Shard costs for Focusing or Resource purchases/exchanges to account for those that exploited their way to six/seven digits worth of Shards would effectively punish long time players who didn’t use the exploits while also running the risk of locking new players out of the ability to use these services. There are a number of other Resources that players already have to spend alongside Shards to Focus/Purchase items; Resources that do not suffer from the same problems as Shards because they have historically had hard caps that have prevented a select few from exploiting their way to near-inexhaustible stores. So just remove the problematic Resource. Easy. (΄◉◞౪◟◉`)

  • They lost their value because they were just a random common resource players had to gather. Unlike basket balls or golf balls they weren't used for anything particularly special.

    • Bungie likes to go on about balancing the economy but in reality I have so many resources at my disposal I am basically a dragon on top of a hoard of gold. For the record, I sold every single shard before the season started since they were getting removed soon and we were told Master Rahool wasn't taking them any more. Surprise surprise, when this new season rolls around and we still need them to upgrade gear and pay Xur, at least until the new DLC. So then the process began again of hoarding Legendary Shards, and I am back up to nearly 3,000 with simply playing about 2 days each week. The main argument though was that New Lights didn't have much of them and were always running out. This is due to needing to upgrade their gear but also I would wager that they simply did not understand they need to delete gear instead of just shoving everything into their vault. This most likely is not an issue with acquiring them, it is that Bungie does not communicate that you need to delete bad rolls to get resources, to upgrade good rolls. I still maintain that it was a bad decision to eventually remove them instead of making it worth the hoarders' while to spend them regularly on the end game side of things.

      • It's because they're uncapped. That's it. That's the answer.
