Cultural implications of the Last City

Although I agree with the science behind the Last City being located in Chile, I always felt the cultural element doesn't support that. We see clear preservation of various cultures within the Last City except Chile and native cultures, Festival of the Lost aside (and even then, that's a stretch). Mulling it over, it seems native villages would have a high survivability rate due to lack of interplanetary tech sought by the Eliksni, unity of the community, regular use of localized resources for survival, and possession of firearms and other weapons/strategies for self defense. That being said, there is either a plot hole in D2, there was another genocide within D2 during golden age that isn't mentioned, or Chile isn't the location of the Last City Many may not care about this but it would definitely add to the scope of the D2 world and lore.

It was changed from D1 to D2. Early Dark Age lore showed the Cosmodrome was the main source of salvage for the City before it ever was the City. Iron Lord lore showed they were going there before they had ships or sparrows to travel around in. They built the Temple as their base to overlook the City. How exactly does that work when the City is half way around the world and you can see the Cosmodrome from the Temple? That right there was the proof that the location of the city retconned. Nor is there any attempt to explain how refugees made it across the oceans to get to South America to begin with. We only see mention of it in D2 the Pilgrim Guard leading people from Central/North America to South America. In short, they changed it and left it alone. So whatever importance may have existed, they scrapped. Just like how “the Guardian” became any run of the mill Guardian . We are really getting a slimmed down version of the story. The worst part is, there is no reason for the change from our perspective. Which means there had to of been a juicy lore reason and now we will never know.

I believe Last City can be somewhere in Europe, same for the Farm (I really miss this location!), probably near the EDZ or the Cosmodrome, both are in Russia iirc. There's something I really love about the Tower/Last City, which is the diversity of cultures that you can find in there, many traditional elements from many countries. And a very nice detail from Bungie, is how they have named their Holiday Festivities as Dawning, which is more neutral and inclusive, and realistic than, for example, Christmas/New years. It's very beautiful and respectful both for us the players and the characters.

    • I thought of it as Russia based on the vegetation, building designs and terrain.

      • I always assumed it was in Russia, since the cosmodrome is in or near Russia.

Are you missing all the mats, furniture and general ai? Cause a lot of the tower actually mirrors pre golden age culture I get why you're saying this but not everything needs to be 150% accurate, it IS a fictional universe, forcing it to go to far into fact will create several political and social issues

In D1, when flying towards the tower it always looked to me that the traveler was located near India. Maybe I just don't know my geography well enough, but that's what I always thought.

          • I've thought that the last City was somewhere in the Himalayas.

It exists wherever the least amount of catastrophic damage was inflicted on the surface of the planet. Does it really matter what the former designation of nationality or borderlines were?!? The “cultural implications” seem petty to bring up as a discussion of relevance.

            • According to the devil's ruin mission twilight gap is in the edz, twilight gap overlooks the last city. Therefore last city is in the edz.

            • Definitely Chilean mountains. When we travel to earth in our ship, the general direction the ship is headed to is South America. Plus, many signs in the tower have Spanish words.

Considering the article hasn’t been updated since 2015 with any kind of confirmation from Bungie, I can assume it isn’t confirmed. It could just be a coincidence and the Last City is like Springfield in the Simpsons. It could be anywhere or nowhere. It’s location just looks cool to have a mountain next to us, and symmetrical night and day times was just to have an equal amount of both times of day so in the accelerated time of the Tower the night didn’t end in 5 minutes. I’m not saying it’s not true that the tower is in Chile. Just that sometimes we can see what we want to see. Patterns and clues where none were intended. I had always assumed the city was in Europe somewhere. Possibly Eastern Europe. Close to the cosmodrome, but not too close. Still needing flying transportation. No science behind it. Just a feeling.

These are some good points. I have a theory on how all of this could hypothetically be correct even if the City is somewhere else. Since the City is all that’s left of Humanity, I think it would be logical to assume that the original residents came from multiple former cultures. As you say, native villages may have survived the collapse more so than others and brought their old way of life with them. This could explain why the culture of the City may be mainly based off of older native cultures I don’t have any big theories on where exactly it is but I remember seeing the City from the Farm, which was in the European Dead Zone so I think it must be somewhere around or in Europe.

                • The last city is a stupid idea. Where do the foods and water come from, as any urbanized area requires a large area of rural areas to support it.

                  • That's actually a very interesting subject. I think the only problems that might arise is how native cultures would be represented in game and getting all that done in a way that looked right. Plus the point seemed to kind of be to have us not know exactly where the last city is. Very interesting thing to think about though.

The last city is in Poland or Ukraine.

                      • Guess what.....I don't care where the Last City is.....why? When the First Collapse happened.....Cities, Towns, Countries, Nations, Kingdoms all Fell. Which is why the Last City is called the LAST City. And not Washington or Beijing, or New York City.....it's the World beginning anew. Everyone United under 1 Being. Not as separate people...but as one. Also, Old Items..... begin to Degrade over time. It's been bat least 5-7 hundred years since the Collapse. Only thing we will find....is fossils. Unless its golden age Tech.
