If you're gonna move the goalposts every time we aren't on track to reach them, the quest is pointless.
If you want to give everybody a free item, just give out the free item.
If you want to make a grindy quest most people won't bother with, make it account based so that whoever actually does it can have the ultra-rare reward.
Neither the "community" nor the "quest" are present in how these are playing out. A fraction of players grind their eyes out to not hit the goal and then you auto-complete the quest anyways.

The sad part is even if we reach the goal, it will most likely be a reskin, old gear engram or something as lame as a cypher you can't pick up because of bungie logic only letting us hold one at a time. And ffs I don't need another exotic ship, ghost or sparrow bungie! Surprise us and give us something new please? Just once?

Niobe Labs. Corridors of Time. Empyrean Foundation. The Lie. And now this Dawning event. Every time Bungie puts out something that asks the entire community to work together, only the try hards work towards it or no one at all. When will Bungie learn we don't enjoy events that either ask us to do outrageous tasks, or mindlessly boring tasks.

Problem is lack of incentives. We don’t know what reward is and general assumption is it will just be a cosmetic of some variety that many either don’t care about or don’t like. Some ranking system that gives additional rewards based on contribution at end of event would also go a long way for this. Community challenge would be more impressive if contribution felt rewarding. Other than turning in the cookies for gift in return’s there is no incentive once the ship quest is done. Having something happen like getting something worthwhile every incremental amount would go a long way to encourage participation.

As a solo player I agree. A quest along the line of this would be much better: Step one: kill 2000 cabal Step two: kill 2000 hive Step three: kill 2000 fallen Step four: get 500 kills with sidearms Step five: get 500 kills with pulse rifles...... So on so fourth. Just make is a little grindy but still doable. Just kill stuff by yourself or with a team and you can do it at your own pace. If you want to grind it all out very quickly fine, if you want to slowly work on it over the course of a week or 2 fine. These community events suck. This game has no community. Bungie screws the pooch and drove the majority of the community away.

It's a fun thing for the community to go for. Who cares if they misjudge participation and still want to give us the rewards?
-
Agreed. I hate these community quests. I’m not invested at all. Seeing the percentage bar go up 1% every 10 hours doesn’t make me want to help.

Gives some material for Streamers to show

Bungie doesn’t want to give us free stuff, they want us to “earn” our loot. And community events are supposed to foster a feeling of ‘togetherness’, make us feel more connected with our fellow players. I think a much more realistic goal is for Bungie not to set their ( future ) goalposts so high. I’ve long believed that whoever’s in charge of crunching numbers for the investment team needs to be replaced, since most of this games current failing revolve around the investment department ( currencies, progression, infusion, rewards, sunsetting, etc ). I spent 2 hours playing Destiny this morning, and each Eva Levante bounty was only granting 2-3 Dawning essence. Two hours of grinding, and I still did not have enough essence to bake a single cookie ( let alone the 2 that were in my quest log ). Fortunately, my last bounty paid out a decent chunk of essence ( I now had 45, and I needed 30 for 2 cookies ). I baked my 2 damn cookies, and looked at my remaining 15 essence, and I said “-blam!- this shit”, Bungie have taken something that should have been a fun distraction, and turned it into a chore.

They should seriously just make more strikes instead.

Yeah, they totally underestimate there players, and in most cases have to move the goalpost to let us win Either severely reduce the numbers,or just stop community challenges all together -
Even with a buff there is still a chance we will fail.
