I’ve never felt so happy about a chicken

My sister has about fifteen chickens, all of which she has lovingly raised since they were little chicks. The most friendly of them come when she calls their names and stretch their necks over her shoulder when she kneels on the grass. Up until today, not a single predator has snatched a bird even though they’re free to roam around the yard during the day. A hawk attacked the flock and my sister lost two of her hens. The rest of the birds scattered, so I rushed over to help her find them and bring them back to the safety of the coop. Each one we found ran away and even ignored their favorite snack when we offered it to them; however, by God’s grace, we rounded up all but one hen. We waited until sunset, hoping that Juney the hen would come home for the night, when we heard clucking from the house up the hill! My sister knelt and called her name, and Juney quite literally ran straight into her arms! It was one of the most warming things I had seen in a long time. Even though all the other hens were too scared to follow my sister, Juney did not hesitate. We are still sad to lose two loved members of my sister’s flock, but this made it a lot easier to take in. I’m so thankful that we can receive joy (and sometimes hope) from our pets, even if it’s in something as simple as a chicken.
