"Level Cap for The Taken King will be 40"

From this week's update:
Character Level Cap for all players will be raised to 34 - Level Cap for The Taken King will be 40
Could someone from Bungie please clarify this (Cozmo, Deej ... that intern whose name nobody remembers) ... because those two statements, when run together, imply that you are actually going so far as to lock players out of leveling up (beyond 34) unless they buy the Taken King DLC. I'm hoping it's just poor wording, but you make a point to note "for all players" in reference to the 34 level cap ... then 40 for Taken King. If all players are able to cap at 40 - the first statement isn't necessary. Again - it implies you will be locking those who don't buy the next DLC out of even leveling up past 34 (and, in turn, lock them out of things like the new 'level 40 only' nightfall). EDIT: Wasn't sure, so went back and checked a previous weekly update ... and yup, the Vanguard Heroic Playlist is also gated at level 40 too. So once more - please, someone from Bungie, confirm that this is just really poor wording. Thanks. ---------- EDIT - UPDATED ANSWER: From the patch notes for today's 2.0 update (https://www.bungie.net/7_Destiny-Update---09082015/en/News/News?aid=13474):
Character Level Cap raised to 34 for all players - Your Character Level will be grandfathered into your highest possible Light Level from all gear in your inventory and vault - Character Level Cap will be increased to 40 on 9/15 (requires The Taken King)
And there you have it. Level 40 will be attainable ONLY if you buy TTK, and this matters because it means that they are using a basic game mechanic as a means to lock players who do NOT buy this DLC out of content that they may already own - via the new "level 40 only" approach to Nightfalls, the Vanguard Herioc Playlist (the 'replacement' for the Weekly Heroic Strike) ... and perhaps even Daily Heroic Stories, etc. I'm a season pass holder and still thought it was a low tactic when they refused to offer a non-DLC playlist for these modes and activities (like other games have for a decade now) - locking players out of them on a week-to-week basis based on what DLC they did / didn't have. But now - even IF you have the content for those modes and activities in a given week, you still cannot play them UNLESS you buy TTK. Welcome to the age of digital extortion ... one "DLC" at a time. Oh, and thanks Bungie ... for not having the decency (read: guts) to clarify / confirm this question - that was asked repeatedly in multiple trending threads since last week's update: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/151225298/0/0 https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/151304767/0/0 https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/151272830/0/0 https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/150851385/0/0 (...for a handful of examples...) • Its piss poor business ethics and honestly bungie should be ashamed of themselves. I have been shown that it may not be intentional and technical limitations may be involved. To that I don't know, but this game was in development for a LONG time. Your telling me the best system they could come up with is locking previously accessible content each time there's major update. Pathetic. And perhaps im at fault for expecting more from bungie, it won't happen again.

    • So pretty, much destiny is about to die, there will be those few people who buy ttk. Mostly new players because of the collectors edition. But all the veterans, are about to leave. Whatever mcc has been awesome the last 3 weeks and I can't wait for halo 5! If Bungie really wanted they're veterans to stay, all they would have to do is increase the level cap for everybody to 40.

      • That's stupid as hell, so if I don't get ttk, that means no one will ever take me in a nightfall, raid, this is so dumb! Bungie screwed up this time

It's not unreasonable or uncommon mechanics for an individual's personal level cap to be determined by the content they own in any given game. I personally thought it was strange that people could reach max without the first two dlc's, tbh. It's unreasonable in this case because instead of giving us (ttk purchasers) new level-relevant content in the form of new dlc, we are recycled old shit whilst those who choose not to get the dlc are locked out of old shit I could honestly do without or wouldn't mind doing on a low level. Honestly, this is bs all around. The game is overall lame, so when I get on I'm not trying to bore myself to death with nightfall anyway. And yet those without ttk have so little. Why punish someone who's capable of enjoying this game with no new content? Reward them... Simply by not fkn them over.

      • And... I'm done with this nonsense. I followed TTK up until now. But this is just too much.... greed, condescending and utter greed. Ugh.

      • I was going to get the TTK dlc but then decided to wait it out to see if its even worth it. Only considering the dlc parts, not including the 2.0 update that goes with it, it doesn't seem like its worth $40. You can get Dark Souls 2 Scholar of the First Sin for $30 ATM, the base game was infinitely better and the dlcs cost less each. Go figure. But, if there will be no motivation to keep playing until reliable info is available about the dlc, I don't think I'll stay interested long enough in the news to buy TTK even if its amazing.

            • Supposing that without the DLC the level cap is 34, does that mean that anyone without the DLC also cannot buy Weapons or Armor for the Vendors, use Y2 versions of Exotics, or use any Legendaries from Engrams/PvP drops? That would be very frustrating, lol.

              • i think they mean that when taken king actually releases its going to be capped at level 40 but since the 2.0 update is coming out on the 8th and not the 15th they don't want people being level 40 before taken king comes out which is why it says level cap for all players will be 34 (when 2.0 is applied) then raised to 40 (when TTK is released)

                • This means that people that don't buy TTK cannot use any high level TTK weapons and armor. They will also be excluded from the raid, new strikes and missions.

                  • Bungie did use curious wording, making clear that the level cap was 34 for everyone from Sep. 8 to Sep. 14 and then saying that afterwards the level cap would be 40 for those who play The Taken King. Why would Bungie put non-DLC players at such a disadvantage when they release "Destiny 2"? They wouldn't, and this could be an indication that "Destiny 2" will not only make all of our gear obsolete, it will also make our levels obsolete. Some say this idle speculation plays right into Bungie's hands. I say it needlessly drives away players that could be retained if Bungie communicated a clear plan of progression.

                  • I was going to continue playing without TTK. But since a purchase is required to play the original game content then I'm out. (Nightfalls and such) all my gear is rendered useless for PVE... I tried, but this time my brother will need to find a new game to coop with me.

                      • i don't see why anyone would WANT to play this game without the new content. everything has been nerfed and torn apart and is boring AF. the problem lies with the way nightfalls are designed to be endgame content. they want this game to evolve. unfortunately, that means that those who don't jump on the hype train with the new DLC will get left behind and be unable to do the new content. there is no way around that without giving away the farm. this is the inherent problem with evolving progression. tbh, i lose more and more interest with this game in each passing day. i remember last winter, i would login every day and run all the daily bounties on three different warlocks. now, the thought of logging in for just a single day to complete just one character's short list of activities is mind-numbingly boring. this game is my "old yeller." i really need to just take it out back and put a bullet in its head already. =(

                      • I really don't understand how this doesn't make sense to people. There raising the level cap to 34 to go along with update 2.0 which is a massive overhall of the UI and everything else than with the release of TTK a week later the level cap will raise to 40

...and this is different from every other expansion how exactly? You want on the ride, you pay the fare. If you don't, 34 will be just as good for TDB and HoW as it was last week.
