Lore and Theories: What is Osiris up to?

Hello! Qwerty here on behalf of Secrets of Destiny. Here is a little round up on what we know about Osiris and what I think he is doing. I will try to separate the fact from theory, but keep in mind that we are dealing in both. So who was he? Osiris was a Warlock for the Tower that had fought in the battle of Six Fronts who, under recommendation from Saint-14, became the Vanguard Commander — a position currently held by Zavala. He became tired with the tedious world that most Guardians were used to and instead focused his time on everything else in the Destiny universe. He dabbled in "thanatonautics, Ahamkara-lore, chasing after Xur and the tricks of the Nine" while inspiring others to follow in his footsteps. He inspired Kabr and the Titans (including Pahanin) to explore the Vault of Glass, for Hunters to pursue his visions, and for Warlocks to abandon their studies of the Traveler in favour of understanding the Darkness. Basically, many major Guardians that you know of were inspired by his teachings and ideologies, with the exception of a few such as Toland, Saint-14 and the Iron Lords, who were forging their legends at relatively the same time. According to Brother Vance, Osiris was either the Speaker's apprentice or vice versa. Either way, they were bitter rivals to each other due to Osiris's image inspiring other Guardians to leave their blind knight-errant mentality in search of understanding. So what is he doing While very vague from this point on, it is grounded for a little bit more. Osiris has found a way to access the Vex network and his method of entrance has something to do with the Sun. He sacrificed his body so that his soul could access the Vex network. (Charlemagne notes that it could be a metaphor more than him physically burning away his body and using his soul) So what does that mean? Well the network, as quoted from Charlemagne:
The Vex network is a living bio-mechanical information stream that connects to all Vex throughout time and space.
Which means he can exist, or at least his soul can, in any time or reality. This means we need to define how time is treated in the Destiny universe; namely through the Vex and FWC. - FWC's plans to find a single timeline untouched by war means that multiple version of reality exist - - I feel this is supported in part by the infinite theorem: In the mirror-like crags of the Fields of Glass, a single mote of dust produces infinite reflections. This is only supporting if you view "The Fields of Glass" to mean time, following the reasoning for naming the Vault of Glass - The Stranger's interventions mean that time is fluid, changeable, rather than static - The Vex's attempt at integrating into the Laws of Physics means it of the same stuff as natural forces - The Lighthouse grimoire's New Monarchy letter that describes Mercury to be in multiple places at the same time And Osiris is connected to time now, just like the Vex. Now we move into the shakiest of grounded information, before moving to only theory. I will note the switch. So, Osiris has now seen the worlds of the past and future. He knows that history repeats itself to some degree and understands what the future holds depending on what actions do and do not happen. We don't know exactly how Osiris exists, but he can communicate through his followers — such as a Warlock that went blind in the Trials, Vance. This thread is not so much about what Osiris is now, but it is about what he wants to do. I will now use more theory than fact that is largely linked together through standing next to Brother Vance. So grain of salt from this point on. I will tell you my view on it, but make your own if you do not agree, just PLEASE base it on fact and not second hand information from shady people in alleyways (Note from Charlemagne: Vance and Xur not included). I will put the quotes in such a way that you should just be able to follow the line of thought, and then I will briefly explain. So, all from Vance:
"Osiris stood before the Nine on the ice fields of Europa, but the time wasn't right" "He says the Nine are vulnerable every moment they touch our world." "They say the Nine released Skolas, no doubt they had their reasons. But it brought you here and they may yet regret that." "I came here because we have business of our own with the Queen. Nothing to do with Wolves, but plenty to do with Skolas." "Do what the Queen asks, this is all part of the pattern." "The Queen and Osiris, I believe they conspire. Have you heard the name Oryx, Guardian?" (THE QUEEN 2 Grimoire) "Oryx, this name, do you know it? They want this Oryx here, out of the Darkness" "The purpose of the trials is to hone the right weapon for the right moment. "If we miss our moment, if we're not ready. It won't come again" "Quiet. Still. Wait for them to come into alignment." "Ah, here. If were not ready when the moment comes, if we miss by seconds...Darkness"
So Osiris was most likely the soft spoken man in the room with the pale lipped Hunter (I believe Eris, given Osiris's relation to the Hidden as well as Eris's connection to Hive and Darkness) trying to kill Oryx in the Queen 2 Grimoire, and his reasons for hosting the Trials when he did was to prepare the Guardians for when Oryx was to be drawn out of the Darkness. So, the question is: Why, exactly, does he wants Oryx dead? It has something to do with the Nine and their motives. The Nine did not plan on the Guardians becoming "God-slayers," which means Oryx's death will probably come as a hit to them and their motives, whatever those may be. This is after they were angered about the Queen exploring their territory in Europa and them releasing Skolas (Note from Charlemagne: Funny how now she's upset with Oryx invading her territory). Because it is about Skolas, not the Wolves, I think it has something to do with Skolas's attempt at becoming the Kell of Prophecy by harnessing the Oracles, which shows the Vex's (or maybe the oracle's owner's) desired futures in the seas of time, which again deals in time, something Osiris has now meddled in and possibly become a part of. What do you think is going on, Guardian?

  • I think Osiris is secretly working/ being controlled by/for the nine, I recall him meeting with the nine on Europa, I also like to believe that the nine are the nine remaining Ahamkara, Ahamkaraa are thought to be extinct but I highly doubt they are. Ahamkaras are creatures that just by a single touch can change someone or control them The key point that really convinced me, Bungie loves to make connections to real life history and stories, they undoubtedly know the story of Beowulf (and by extension Grendel and the Hobbit), not the shitty shader, the old English tale. In these stories there is a great dragon who holds untold wisdom, knowledge and power, however, they only thing they ever want and can never get enough of is gold. Or more specifically, gold coins. They hoard and sit on these vast piles of gold and are content. Now who is collecting coins like a madman while dishing out crazy powerful items? Xur. He brings out the items the Ahamkara/Nine wish to bargain off and in return he brings in loads of strange coins that his masters can keep for themselves and sit upon. If Osiris did indeed visit the nine he could be being controlled or working for them at this tie. Clearly though this is all THEORY though.

    • What if it's not his soul but rather his light???? Maybe his body is in some stasis and he used his light instead of his soul to go in the vex network?

        • One thing that stuck out: In Egyptian mythology, Horus, the god of the sun, is the child of Osiris. What does that have to do with anything you ask? Well, the last bosses in the main storyline were the Sol Progeny, which is translated to the "Descendants of the Sun." The Sol Progeny would be the descendants of "Horus," who was created by Osiris. Maybe Osiris went too mad from his studies of the darkness, accidentally created the black heart (horus) and caused the Sol Progeny to come into existence? It would be a paradox, Osiris creates the black heart, makes the past vex evil, so a younger Osiris can become obsessed with the darkness and end up creating the black heart. Another interesting bit: Horus, his 4 sons, and 2 other deities were known as the SEVEN Shining Ones who protected Osiris's body.

              • Very well done Qwerty. This is where the spirit of Destiny truly lives. (If only they would incorporate more of the lore into the actual game!) I'll share some of my theories as well. In her fragment grimoire, The Exo Stranger says: "I stand here now and now and now many times, this view, this ground...This is where I always choose to stand. I put my feet where I put my feet before and where I will again and I look at the sky." The way she speaks is similar to the thoughts of Osiris: that history repeats itself. But one question here is to what degree does history repeat itself? Are there just similar circumstances or has this exact timeline been repeated? And if so, then for how long? She talks as if she has seen the events in Destiny play out many times before and every time things play out the same way. I'm not sure if the Nine are against us. After all, they do send an emissary every week to outfit Guardians with some of the most powerful gear in existence. However, I do think you're on to something here: Guardians were not expected to be as successful as they have been. Perhaps many times before in other timelines, we failed to effectively combat the Darkness. But here, in our timeline we have indeed become god slayers. Perhaps it has been the motive of some entity that we break the cycle of Darkness that we have fallen to in other timelines. Whose motive it is, I cannot say, but I do think this. Clearly the Nine want us to be armed and prepared, perhaps for Oryx. Remember this as well, Osiris was exiled from the tower for many reasons. "Dabbling in thanatonautics, Ahamkara lore, chasing after Xur and the tricks of the Nine." But one thing in particular stuck out to me, he was also exiled because he diverted attention away from the Traveler. He questioned the Speaker, and others came to do the same. His curiosity "split Guardians along ideological lines." He and his followers wanted to know the why of it. Why were they fighting? I believe that Osiris' connection to space-time has allowed our timeline to survive. That perhaps because of his intervention with the flow of time, our timeline has broken the cycle of defeat at the hands of the Darkness. At the end of Osiris' grimoire card, the person attempting to contact him says "Perhaps what drives a Warlock to madness is truth" which suggests that Osiris' theories may indeed be factual, or partially factual; (at least to this person.) One thing is for sure though, in the natural flow of things Guardians are not meant to prevail and our recent success in combating the Darkness will have consequences and it may have been in the interest of someone for us to continue along the cycle.

                                        • Broad concept of,what I think the grand scheme is: Toland eluded to the struggle of light and dark is simply evolution trying to decide the next step of all life. The Nine are trying to tip the scales (if they are trying to help the darkness prevail by sending great threats at us or gradually picking off the greatest forces of the darkness to strengthen the light is unknown) while the Speaker is acting on the opposite side from them. The Exo Stranger is working on one sides behalf, although she may not be aware of it. The goal we guardians will ultimately face is to eliminate both parties and let "Destiny" determine the winner. Like I said, this is a fairy broad concept. I lack the time and energy to really dig for as much facts and info as you (which is extremely impressive my compliments) so I wouldn't be surprised is someone finds a hole or two in my theory. Thoughts?
