Can we just talk about the Witcher III DLC Plan for a minute?

Click here for the direct link. CD Projekt Red, the developers of the acclaimed Witcher series, announced many months ago that they were going to give game owners free DLC. 16 pieces of free DLC including not just aesthetic stuff (which is cool on its own), but some missions as well. So what do you have to do to qualify for this DLC? ... Buy the game. You can buy the game on ANY platform, you do NOT have to preorder, you can get ANY edition of the game from the normal one to the $150 collector's edition... and you get all these DLCs when they release. Now, these DLCs are by no means huge expansions. Some new beards, a single mission here and there, whatever. But they're free. And they're free to everybody with no restrictions. You can even get the game weeks after it launches and get the DLC. Years, even- there's no time limit. And that's cool. No Destiny type ridiculous exclusives. No Halo type 'preorder from 5 different stores if you want all the DLC.' Despite Witcher being made for PCs before consoles, no 'PC master race' crap. Just flat out 'everybody gets everything, thank you for supporting us.' And that speaks volumes about the developer. This game has been delayed like three times already. For a lot of games, that would signify people are losing confidence in the game. Not here. Witcher is a source of national pride for them, so each delay isn't just for political reasons or because the developer ran out of time to actually complete the game, but to make the game BETTER than what it was. They could launch now and it'd be complete, if they stuck to their last schedule. But they thought of things they could add so they delayed it to make it cooler. And contrary to most other games, this actually INCREASED hype. Just how backwards is this company? Free DLC? No exclusives? Paying no attention to preorders? Delaying the game multiple times? Delaying the game multiple times which actually makes people MORE excited? It's crazy. None of this information is new. The DLC plan was announced back in November. But I'll be damned if it isn't still worth talking about. I'll definitely be PCing this game- I loved the first two. And I'd encourage everybody to support this developer at launch rather than waiting for demonstrating flat out honesty, ridiculous amount of care for their product, and going against some of the most disturbing trends in the gaming industry today.

  • My only concern here is the potential backlash they'll get if they do a large exclusion down the road and charge for it. I have no problems with charging for content on the scale of what Skyrim and Borderlands did, and if CDPR puts out a large expansion they should get paid for it. I just hope enough people understand the difference - horse armor is not the same thing as the Badass Crater of Badassitude. Just as developers and publishers watched to see if Bungie/Activision could pull off the bullshit they pulled, they'll also watch how CDPR does with their approach. Sadly, the former were successful already, so the latter needs to hit it out of the park.

    • CDPR is amazing. No, actually they're not. They're good. They're what developers should strive to be. They are the "bar". Them not being scummy or cheating their fans should be normal. That said, they're still amazing. The Witcher III is going to be incredible.

CDPR hasn't steered my wrong yet. They're one of the few companies in this industry with any trust left. A good game will sell through word of mouth. Free DLC is a bonus. Plus they don't seem to bloat themselves with over inflated marketing budgets like most AAA games. Can't wait to see what they do for Cyberpunk 2077.

    • I hope the Witcher 3 sells boatloads. This is the kind of developer people need to support.

Tldr please. I bought the expansion when I preordered. There's so many things to do with the main game, not sure if I'll even get to the dlc. Just because a game is delayed doesn't automatically mean people are losing confidence. Batman was also delayed, and look at how good that game looks.

      • CDPR gets it. They're not run by some guy in a suit that saw the Game of War ad at the Super Bowl and thinks that BS needs to be implemented in all their games. And it pays dividends. I will buy their games no questions asked. I am happy to give them my money. I will write on message boards or tell others that they need to play these guys games.

      • I hate the Witcher... It sucks. DLC platform is interesting. I think it's desperate, but if they sell enough at 150....they might be able to pull it off without a loss. That would be commendable if they can pull it off without taking a loss.

        • I approve this is very commendable their DLC plan for Witcher 3. I was quite impressed with Witcher 2 the little I played, have to devote some more time to this gem. Actions like these make you want to support companies like this, I am going to buy this game as it looks good and I support these good practices, won't pre-order but will buy it. If only other companies learned from this. Also bang on with your point of the exclusive pre-orders for Halo at different retailers, that was total bs.

          • If a company wants to make money of dlc, do what bioware does. Give them the option of paying for chests to get new gear. But make actually acquiring the chest through grinding easy enough for it to be fair. And then have events And free dlc to make a really addictive game. I played mass effect for a year straight and probably only spent 10$ on loose change in my store wallet. And now im currently hooked on dragon age Inquisition's multiplayer and i havent spent a dime and im getting plenty of good gear.

I take my hat off to CD Projekt red... I've watched a vid from one of the developers. He talks about this DLC package, comes across as genuine. The witcher 3 will be the first big multiplatform game only on current gen... The development team is not held back by the old console's, believe this could be the first current gen masterpiece. 🔜😁

              • It's pretty awesome for them to do this, especially in this day and age where anything and everything is a microtransaction. It's not surprising though, considering they've got funds coming in from GOG.com (for those who've never checked it out, it's an awesome site and the games are DRM-free) so I assume they can afford to offer free DLC.

              • Never played Witcher, seemed overcomplicated to me. I guess that whole DRM thing is kinda cool. It honestly doesn't seem like that big of a deal.

It's CD Projekt Red. They're known for actually giving a crap about their customers. I mean, they own gog.com which they pride on having no DRM.

                • Witcher 3 first game I've preordered in years. Transparency is the name of the game, companies just need to be open and honest during the development process.
