Stranger, obviously.
It would very hard to deal with considering it's YOUR pet and you feel responsible for keeping it safe, but you'll get over it eventually. What I wouldn't get over is knowing a family lost a love one for a pet.

Also, the pet has a shorter lifespan, so it would be a waste to not save the human.
