why am i letting something that holds personal value and meaning die over something that holds none of that? If i dont know you, you carry 0 impact on how much i care unless empathy were present in which it would be for both pet and human negating that consideration. If there was nothing i could do i wont blame myself for any mans death. Thems the rules in this thread - nothing you can do to save both. 0 impact 0 guilt in this situation. Now, if there was a chance and i goof'd up and failed then some guilt may be present.

Because the stranger likely has personal value to a greater number of people. And they are likely able to contribute more to others throughout their life than your dog. Simple utilitarian equation.

I don't expect to change your mind. But you should know that your decision isn't rational.

I've decided you deserve to understand alittle bit about my perspective. To start you need to think outside the box. Who decides that human beings are more entitled to life over the animal kingdom? No one. We do not rule the earth anymore than any organism that resides on it. The human race is well beyond capacity to the point that we have become nothing more than a plague to the earth. We are a virus that grows and destroys the very host of our existence. We tear at nature and build structures to suit our needs we bring more harm to this planet than any other creature alive and we also pose much more of a threat to it as well. You can cling to your beliefs, values, equations, whatever but in the end we are all subjugated by nature. That is what defines the value of a life. Not us. So when 1 man chooses he doesn't have a right to bias himself on what principles of value that humans constructed - dont be surprised when personal choices are made that defy a man-made system. To word it better - #%*# the system. It's a man-made construct to provide order based on our beliefs of right/wrong. Chew on that its 5am im going to sleep. No im not vegetarian utilitarian hippie any of that.
I've decided you deserve to understand alittle bit about perspective.
You can spare me your condescension.
Who decides that human beings are more entitled to life over the animal kingdom?
Not once did I say that. I said that there are likely more people/conscious creatures that would be negatively affected if the person drowned than the dog. And yes, I am well aware of humanity's destructive nature.
No im not vegetarian utilitarian hippie any of that.
Are you trying to shrug off some perfectly valid beliefs by calling them "hippie"? That strikes me as very close-minded.

  • Rational to you, his decision however seems to make total logical ad moral sense to him.

  • No, it makes emotional sense. Logic isn't subjective.

  • Then the logical course of action, in your opinion, is to save the stranger then?
