Get this, he's a teacher, but had to quit his job because the students reminded him too much of his own children, who were tragically killed in a car accident only 2 years earlier. Destiny was the only thing that kept him going. Collecting those flakes became a metaphor for putting together the pieces of his shattered life. He thought that by completing the raid, he could finally move on.

Problem is that stuff like this legit does happen in the game. Met beginners through strikes and nightfalls who had bad advice given to them by "veteran" like OP. Even if OP made this up and its bait, there are those that legit do this and make fun of the beginner working his ass of thinking its legit intel.
