Despite popular belief, often fueled by newbies such as OP- Destiny is not an MMO. Destiny is an open world FPS. Google it. Now that we've established that the foundation upon which OP built his entire useless wall of text, let's start discussing what progress REALLY means. Let's say that you own a house. For some reason, the living area is simply not enough: you need an extra room. What do you do: A) Tear down the entire house and rebuild it with an extra room. B) Break down a wall and build another room from there. The way OP things progression works, is in fact institutionally retarded. There is no progression without progress: and starting all over every 3 months is not progress- it's a waste of time. /thread

  • Deej even said it wasn't a MMO, yet everyone compared it to one. I agree, for destiny to succeed it needs to be completely reworked to be a MMO. This current state it's in where the MMO aspect is there and that's what people see, it refuses to be one.

  • Thanks for posting that. My sentiments on all counts. Destiny is missing more feature of common well-known MMO's than it shares. Features of most MMO's that Destiny does not have: Full time proximity chat In-game LFG Trading A story In-game leaderboards Crafting Those are just a few of the top of my head..

A story and crafting have nothing to do with being massively multiplayer. They are more indicative of being an RPG. Skyrim is not an MMO, but it has both of those. Those are the RPG elements of the MMORPGs that you are thinking of (most likely WoW). The other features are spot on though. It would be possible to have an MMO fighter or an MMOFPS. I wish Destiny were an MMO. As it stands it is a shared, closed world (who can really defend it as "open" with all its invisible walls and death barriers) multiplayer FPS with RPG elements.

  • Bungie should take a long good look at how Planetside 2 is working. I admitt, I don't have a lot of hours put into that game, but... Daaaaaaaaaaaayum.

  • So you agree, it's definitively not an MMO, not MMO-lite, not even MMO-esque. To me, it's a shooter first and foremost with some minor character customization features by way of an addictive random loot system.

  • Oh, definitely. I didn't mean for that to come off as contradicting you. I was just pointing out that crafting, in depth story, level progression, gear customization, etc. are not features of an MMO. It seems like a lot of people on this forum talk about MMO as a genre when all it is is a description of the multiplayer capabilities. They forget that WoW (the most often cited example) is an RPG that also happens to be MMO.

  • First off that example did not compare to Destiny at all. And second, it's not getting rid of weapons, it's coming across more powerful weapons. You will still be able to use your old ones if you want to, but stronger ones will be available. This sort of like borderlands. You find better weapons as you go up the story/activities.

  • If this game was like borderlands this discussion wouldn't even exist because you could get any weapon in that game at the max level. We wouldn't be leaving anything behind we would just have to work to get it to drop again.

  • Exactly, I'm still enjoying my reforged collected guns and building them with my characters classes in mind, some I will keep some I MAY REPLACE! If we can carry over selected weapons and ARMORS! Then my character won't feel like it's unique, progressing etc. It will feel I tgat I haven't finished my building of tge characters many customisations and have to drop everything to start all over again and look the same! WHAT A WASTE OF TIME!

  • It's been plain as day that Destiny borrows concepts from the genre. It just so happens this type of progression is one of those concepts that will be borrowed. If you find it to be a waste of time, leave. It's not like every person that plays an online game stays. People leave. You don't like it stop being a pain in the ass for the rest of us that are understanding of what Bungie is trying to do. Vanilla, TDB, HOW gear had their time. They should stay at the damage values they can currently reach. No more of this elevating bull shit.

  • And think of the noobs...they should, nay, NEED to go thru the beloved Vault, Meager Crota, Frustrating and stressful PoE...if there is no ascension or other means of upgrading, not only do those items become irrelevant, but also the activities associated with those items, and it's not like Destiny plus the two DLC so far are chock full of endgame activities #addtothegameinsteadofreolacingshitalready

  •
if there is no ascension or other means of upgrading, not only do those items become irrelevant, but also the activities associated with those items
What Destiny needs is not ascension, it's linear progression. The biggest problem with HOW is that vendor gear light level jumped everyone to 32, bypassing all the current content. Think about it. Why do we even have multiple strike playlists based on level if you can just jump past more than half of them? Might as well have one playlist that updates with each level cap increase.

In 3 days of playtime I had icebreaker Gjallarhorn and Hawkmoon. I had all S tier exotics, fatebringer, and the vex in under 2 weeks of play time. In under a month I had the rest and not because I grinded for them. I barely play this game. My stats for crucible are also well beyond yours, but please be more of a child and reach more.

  • Except for the fact that its the way that all expansion based games works. I never claimed it was an MMO, but it does rely expansions rather than simple map packs. And just like with all games with expansions you will be forced to acclimate to the new content and replace your old gear with it. HoW did it, TDB did it and now TTK will do it as well. You can disagree with the concept, but that doesn't make it magically go away.

  •
Except for the fact that its the way that all expansion based games works.
All expansion based games? Boy you have a lot of games to play. Lmfao. Get some experience before you start yapping.
I never claimed it was an MMO, but it does rely expansions rather than simple map packs.
Oh, but comparing it to MMOs still seemed like a good idea to you? Really? Comparing Destiny to Blizzard games? Whether or not it relies on expansions is irrelevant since everyone does it differently. Do you think Blizzard pushes out a nullifying expansion 3 times a year? Smh.
And just like with all games with expansions you will be forced to acclimate to the new content and replace your old gear with it.
You mean like in WoW? Which is completely irrelevant and unrelatable to Destiny? Take a look at Guild Wars 2, plenty of smaller expansions (yet bigger than Destiny's) and never have they made the old gear moot. They're releasing their first major expansion this year, adding new tiers, making the game more difficult- all without making the players invested time moot. They're not raising the cap. Why, you might wonder, well, why should they? New level caps are nothing but a waste of time. Activites can be made hard without raising the cap and rendering all previous work useless to veterans and irrelevant to new players.
HoW did it, TDB did it and now TTK will do it as well.
HoW didn't do it though, it made everything relevant by introducing Etheric Light. But yes, there is a chance that they'll ruin all investments again with TTK since Bungie aren't famous for making good decisions.
