Raven Chronicles: Chapter 3

CHAPTER 3: Dawn of Twilight Sylv’s eyes flew open to a rich dusk sky. He felt odd, as if he had just had a good night’s sleep, and it took him a moment to get his bearings. He was in a valley - empty, silent, and ringed with mountains. The sky above was dark, setting upon night, yet lit crimson by an unseen light. Almost as strikingly as the vibrant sky, the valley was completely silent. A valley of twilight. Sylv gasped as he shot to his feet. This was it - what he had been searching for for all this time. This was the Valley of Twilight. That meant that somewhere in this Valley, possibly beneath his very feet, was the end of his journey. Just to make sure it was real, Sylv stooped down and ran his fingers through the pale gray vegetation. It was definitely real. Somehow more real than anything he had ever seen before. Raising his head, Sylv’s eyes trained ahead of him, where a distant monastery sat around a pass in the mountains. Odds were, his objective was either in that monastery, or whatever it guarded on the other side of the pass. So he set out, trekking across the valley step by step, or was it mile by mile? His sense of time felt distorted, and he genuinely couldn’t tell how long he had been walking for. Eventually, as the mountains rose ever higher and stone cliffs loomed before him, he came to the pass. The pass was wide, but not too wide. Wide enough to march out a staged army, but narrow enough to defend against one, Sylv wagered. Above, he could clearly see the purpose of the monastery: unbreakable defense of the pass. Bridges spanned the top of the gap, leaving anyone below helpless to defend themselves. Even the walls of the pass were lined with arrow slits. Somehow, though, he got the feeling it was empty, just like the entire valley behind him. So Sylv leveled his eyes ahead and marched on. About halfway down the pass he could see a stream cutting across the second valley, and beyond it, a forest. Somehow, though the forest was fairly devoid of vegetation, his eyes couldn’t penetrate it in the slightest. He stopped for a moment and considered. Sylv wagered this is where the true test would be.
