[MENTOR] Daylight Saving Time and Destiny 2

Hello everyone! Twice a year, many players will experience a change between Daylight Saving (Summer) time, and Standard time. This change of time impacts when players will experience time based events in Destiny, as measured in a player's local time. This article will provide a resource to see upcoming time changes, and explain how time changes will affect when you experience events in Destiny 2. UPCOMING TIME CHANGES

The following site provides a list of all time zone changes over the next four weeks: http://www.timeanddate.com/time/dst/events.html This list should be used as reference only. Please check your local resources, such as news outlets, for when and how time zone changes will affect you.

HOW TIME CHANGES AFFECT DESTINY EVENTS

Some events in Destiny are tied to a specific time of day, and/or a specific day of the week. Changing your clocks can have an effect on when you experience these events in your local time. How you experience a change, depends on if the event is tied to the Destiny Server clock, or if the event is manually launched by Bungie. See the following two sections for which events fall into these categories, and how your time zone changes affect when you experience these events. In Destiny 1, reset times are also subject to change during DST: - Reset will be at 2:00 AM Pacific (9:00 AM UTC) while Daylight Saving Time is active from March to November. - Reset will be at 1:00 AM Pacific (9:00 AM UTC) while Daylight Saving Time is inactive from November to March.

EVENTS TIED TO DESTINY SERVER TIME

Destiny servers use UTC as the server time zone. UTC does not adjust to Daylight Saving time. Visit this site to convert UTC to your local time zone. What is UTC? Coordinated Universal Time, is a global time maintained by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures. It is roughly the time of day at 0 degrees longitude, and therefore approximately equal to GMT. It is periodically adjusted by "leap seconds" to account for changes in the Earth's rotational speed. (source) The following events are tied to Destiny Server Time: Every day at 1700 UTC (5pm), Destiny experiences a daily reset. Several events are tied to this reset time, such as the changing of Activity Challenges, Destination Challenges, Daily Challenge Milestone, and more. Furthermore, several weekly events are tied to the reset on a specific day of the week, such as: - Tuesday: Crucible Playlist Challenges Vanguard Playlist Challenges Gambit Challenge Exo Stranger Challenge Empire Hunt Challenge Prophecy Challenge Bounty Challenges - All NPCs Clan XP Milestone Raid Milestone Activity Checkpoints Clan Engrams - These stick for a little longer. Bright Dust Inventory in Eververse The Iron Banner event does not occur every weekly reset. Refer to Bungie News and This Week At Bungie for dates for Iron Banner. -- - Friday: Trials of Osiris begins on Friday and ends on Tuesday. Trials of Osiris does not go live with Iron Banner being the active event for the week. Xûr arrives on Friday and departs on Tuesday. -- When your local time zone undergoes a change to/from Daylight Saving (Summer) time, you will notice events tied to Destiny Server Time will happen at a different time, in your local time zone, than they previously did. - When you set your clocks forward one hour (March/April in the Northern Hemisphere, September-November in the Southern Hemisphere), events will occur one hour later than they previously did. - When you set your clocks back one hour (September-November in the Northern Hemisphere, March/April in the Southern Hemisphere), events will occur one hour earlier than they previously did. - If you do not adjust your clocks for Daylight Saving Time at any point of the year, you will not experience a change in the time server based events occur. The rule of thumb - In your local time, event occurrences will move in the same direction, and same amount of time, as your clock adjustment.

EVENTS MANUALLY LAUNCHED BY BUNGIE

Some events are not tied directly to the Destiny servers, but are instead launched by Bungie. Bungie is located in the United States, in the Pacific time zone. You will see such events quoted in PST (Pacific Standard Time) or PDT (Pacific Daylight Time). Now, how do time zone changes affect when you experience manually launched events? This is where things get a little more complicated, because the Pacific Time Zone DOES experience Daylight Saving Time (unlike UTC). Your best resource, is converting Pacific Time to your local time, when an event is upcoming: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html But for a more exhaustive set of effects... The United States (and many countries that share a time zone with the US) enter Daylight Saving Time, setting clocks ahead one hour, on the Second Sunday of March. This occurs earlier than many other countries entering DST in the Spring. A return to Standard Time, setting clocks back one hour, occurs on the First Sunday of November. This occurs later than many other countries ending DST in the Fall. If your local time zones does not adjust clocks for Daylight Savings Time, on the Second Sunday of March, events will occur an hour earlier than before. On the First Sunday of November, events will occur an hour later than before. This change does not depend on Northern/Southern Hemisphere.

NORTHERN HEMISPHERE
March/April:
- If you set clocks an hour back on the Second Sunday of March, you will experience no change to when you experience manually launched events. - If you set clocks an hour ahead BEFORE the Second Sunday of March, you will experience events an hour later than before. On the Second Sunday of March, events will return to their previous time for you. - If you set clocks an hour ahead AFTER the Second Sunday of March, on the Second Sunday of March you will begin to experience events an hour earlier than before. Once your time zone makes the same hour ahead clock adjustment, events will return to their previous time for you.
September/November:
- If you set clocks an hour back BEFORE the First Sunday of November, you will experience events an hour earlier than before. On the First Sunday of November, events will return to their previous time for you. - If you set clocks an hour back AFTER the First Sunday of November, on the First Sunday of November you will experience events an hour later than before. Once your time zone makes the same hour back clock adjustment, events will return to their previous time for you.

SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE
March/April:
- If you set clocks an hour back on the Second Sunday of March, you will begin to experience events two hours earlier than before. - If you set your clocks an hour back BEFORE the Second Sunday of March, you will begin to experience events an hour earlier than before. On the Second Sunday of March, events will occur an additional hour earlier, or two hours earlier than before your time zone change. - If you set your clocks an hour back AFTER the Second Sunday of March, on the Second Sunday of March you will begin to experience events an hour earlier than before. Once your time zone makes its adjustments, events will occur an additional hour earlier, or two hours earlier than before the Pacific Time Zone change.
September/November:
- If you set clocks an hour ahead on the First Sunday of November, you will begin to experience events two hours later than before. - If you set clocks an hour ahead BEFORE the First Sunday of November, you will begin to experience events an hour later than before.
