PLEASE READ - STOP UPGRADING EXOTICS!!!
For those who don't get to see all the various news posts from Bungie I just thought I'd drop a quick link for everyone:

What does this mean? Well I will start by saying you should immediately stop upgrading (and spending) your exotic items. From Friday next week Xur will periodically sell a 'newer' version of your favourite exotic gear, which you can buy for 1 exotic shard; the good news is that these upgraded versions will start at the base rate of a fully upgraded current exotic, the bad news? well if you've already got lots of fully upgraded (300) exotics, when you get this newer version it is now in need of being fuly upgraded once again!
Now chances are that you will get away with your 300 weapon until the 'Hard' mode version of Dark Below Raid is released (January), but why would you bother essentially upgrading an item which will be obsolete come January? Xur will sell around 10 items a week, so the lottery on whether your item will be there is RNG dependent again (unlucky for me).
So to all those lucky Guardians who may have got a nice drop on this weeks Nightfall or indeed to those Guardians thinking the latest patch was ace for letting you efficiently upgrade 'that' exotic in your vault without having to use your shard/energy etc .... JUST STOP!
It is also worth adding another efficient tip in preparation for the Dark Below would be to get all your factions (Vanguard, Dead Orbit et al) topped up to the point where you are on the cusp of the next level, stop, put on the next faction item, rinse and repeat. The reason being (sorry should have said this tip is mostly for those 29s out there) that the legendary gear being sold in the tower will be base level 30. However you will also need a special token given from ranking up the various faction along with the specified marks to buy these items. So if your one of these unlucky guardians whose experiences in the Vault have not been kind by way of drops, fear not there are other ways! A better way to spend your time over the next 7 days would be to get leveling up those factions to 98% and stop fantasising that the Vault will one day bless you with the items you need!

Its not worth buying any additional series 1 exotics from Xur this week as all items will be needing upgrading after the 9th....(yes even if he's got the beloved Icebreaker!). eg. if you purchase primary weapon for 23 SC, then you will have to immediately upgrade (1 exotic shard = 7SC) as any time and XP spend leveling the series 1 will be lost upon upgrading to series 2. You will then have to spend another 1 exotic shard to full level the series 2. Series 1 (pre-DLC) = 23SC (original cost) + 7SC (Upgrade) + 7SC (fully level up) = 37SC Series 2 (post-DLC) = 23SC (original cost) + 7SC (fully level up) = 30SC Unfortunately you will have to go through the upgrade path if, like me, you want to take any of your series 1 weapons with you in the long term..... 2. As it is unclear if Xur will have any exotic engrams after the 9th, this may be your last week to buy some for a while. Therefore, it may be worth using your modes of light and buying some engrams from him this weekend. These can then be dismantled into exotic shards? - (this is unconfirmed but its what I'll be doing). 3. Keep all your glimmer before the DLC - It is generally thought that it will Xur will charge 7000 glimmer in addition to 1 exotic shard to upgrade each series 1 exotics (both armour and weapons.
