Sparrow racing basics

I just got Destiny like two days ago and am having a hard time learning Sparrow Racing. I've played other racing games and usually rank well, but not so much here. Could you help me out? 1) It says to press L1 and R1 to boost, but it doesn't work. Is it my sparrow? Do I need another? Where would I get it? 2) Someone tipped me off that pressing R3 or L3 strafes. Are there any other hidden commands? 3) I have a quest to emote, do tricks, or roll. How do I do that? Is it my sparrow again that's stoping me? 4) I have equipment that makes tricks give me more fuel. What is fuel? Is that linked to that boosting I can't do? :) Thanks! You guys rock!
