The Awoken were born in the grey space between the Light and Darkness. In Survivors, the Traveler didn't do as well. It managed to repel the Darkness, but was completely destroyed. No Ghosts were created, leaving us without Guardians, and the Awoken were never born. Survivors is about what could have happened after the Traveler died, following the story of Keis-53 (if you read Blank Slate, this is basically a timeline where the Keis-51 you know [and hopefully love] managed to survive the Collapse).
