Destiny: Legend Untold, Chpt 12 Pt 4

Chapter Twelve: The Old and the New Part Four "Great, Clash it is, then," Veronica chimed, then turned to look across the Tower courtyard, "Crag! Trixie! We have some competition!" I looked over to Crag and Trixie as well, but found myself struggling to hold in a laugh as I saw Trixie trying to wrap her arms around Crag, who was trying desperately to push her away. Trixie stopped at Veronica's call and Crag took his chance to slip away. "YAAAAYYYYY!" Trixie's shout carried across the Tower grounds, drawing the eyes of some Guardians and civilians that had been going about their own business. • • • Within minutes we were all cruising through the Earth's atmosphere in our respective ships, awaiting other Guardians to join us for a Crucible match. "...and that's how I managed to shove a Hunter's own knife up his-" "Drew, we got it," I interrupted my metal companion as he finally finished his story, "Can we talk about something more pleasant now? Like sightseeing or enemy strategy maybe?" "Oh there was that one time I went to a Fallen outpost on mission. The view was amazing, especially once we decorated the joint by hanging the corpses around in fun places. Good times," Drew reminisced. "That's...disturbing," I gagged at the thought. "Someone tell the dolt that I don't want to keep listening to the stream of garbage that always comes out of his mouth," Crag grumbled irritably. "Can do, friend," Drew replied, to our confusion, then addressed me over the channel, "Will, Crag doesn't really want you to talk right now, but he said it in a much meaner way." A metallic thump sounded over the coms, startling all of us. "What was that?" I questioned. After a few moments of silence, I received an answer. "That was Crag's head impacting the side of the cockpit," Crag's Ghost explained. "Did he fall asleep? Or trip?" Drew asked worriedly. Yet another thunk carried over the channel. I shook my head at Drew's ignorance, hoping Crag's Ghost would prevent Crag from suffering any permanent brain damage. "Hey that sounds fun!" Trixie exclaimed, then proceeded to make rhythmic banging inside her ship. "Uh, Trixie, I...Trix...I don't think...ah never mind..." a voice I didn't recognize tried speaking up. "Who's that?" I addressed the newcomer. "I am Trixie's-" the voice began, and before it was cut off I was able to determine it as masculine. "Ghostie!" Trixie interrupted. "Ghostie?" Sierra questioned. "I am Trixie's Ghost, usually called by Ghostie or sometimes even Ghostie Whostie," the Ghost answered, no tone in his voice suggesting that he disliked the names she had given him. "Nice to meet you then...Ghostie," I replied unsurely. Sierra was much less polite. "And you wouldn't rather be called something else?" she asked incredulously. Trixie didn't notice the question as she continued to drum inside her ship, but Ghostie answered. "Not at all; I think the names she makes up are cute, and I wouldn't dream of changing my name from the one she gave me," Ghostie explained. "It just makes you seem like a pansy," Crag's Ghost declared quietly. "Better than no name at all," John pointed out. "But we all have na-" Rush began, but stopped himself short. "Names?" I finished his sentence. "You had names this whole time?!" Sierra exclaimed. "And you didn't tell us?" Veronica added. "Always rushing ahead without thought, aren't you, Rush?" John sighed, and I heard the voices of most of the other Ghosts mumble agreement. "Well?!" Sierra probed. "We all have names, real names mind you, and we all know each other," John explained, "Don't ask me how we know each other or where the names came from, because I don't know." "But we never tell anyone our names and most Guardians don't even bother to name their Ghosts anyway," Rush continued. "Well how 'bout you tell us?" Trixie requested, her drumming finally ceasing. "No," all six Ghosts answered as one. "Why not?" Drew asked. "Because...we...I don't know," Sally tried answering but froze up. "They're for us," Crag's Ghost pitched in. "Yeah, it's like a...family thing," Ghostie tried explaining, "Only we know each other's names. It just doesn't feel right to tell anyone else." "Yet you let us make our own names for you?" I inquired with no small amount of confusion. "It's nice to have something for your Guardian to call you bye; something other than "Ghost" or our names," John concluded. "So if you want to be called by something you have your Guardian make something up instead of just saying your real name?" Veronica mused. "Yes," Sally answered sheepishly. "Well that makes no sense to me, but hey, you do you," Drew said offhandedly. "I'll do you," Veronica tested Drew. "Do me what?" Drew questioned. "Oh you are so adorably dense," Veronica giggled. "Um...th-thanks. I didn't realize you felt that way about my-," Drew stuttered. "Adorableness?" Veronica tried finishing for him. "My density," Drew answered bashfully. "ALL IT TOOK WAS A COMMENT ON HOW THICK THAT PLATING ON YOUR HEAD IS?!" Sierra roared with disbelief, frustration, and amusement in her voice, "Just calling you ignorant?!" "Wait she wasn't complimenting my sweet bod?!" Drew exclaimed with embarrassment. That made Veronica burst with laughter over the channel, followed shortly after by me. As my amusement died down, I heard Trixie addressing Drew. "They don't understand how awesome your bod is," Trixie sympathized. "Yeah, looking beautiful isn't easy," Drew responded, "You also have an awesome bod." "Thanks!" Trixie giggled. "Are...we...there...yet?" Crag's aggravated voice growled. "Just got a twelfth member," a Ghost I wasn't familiar with answered, it's voice female. "I'm assuming your Veronica's Ghost," I spoke out, "Do you have a name?" "Just Ghost, if you'd please," she responded." "Hey she's never asked for a name before, so I didn't bother thinking of one," Veronica defended herself jokingly. "At least she didn't jump right to a name like Ghostie," John cackled. "Almost as bad as Rush," my Ghost chimed in. "Hey, that name suits you, and you told me yourself that you like it," I snapped. "I know I liked watching you hurt that little brain of yours trying to come up with something," Rush laughed. "Oh so now I have the small mind, Mr.Fits-inside-a-soup-can?" I countered. "Hey that's...that's not nice!" Rush whined. "Rush, Rush, Rush," Sierra tutted, "Always trying to catch up with everyone else." "Oh yeah? Well you-!" Rush started to retort. "Please! Ladies and Sierra!" Veronica interrupted, granting a chuckle from me and a grumble from Sierra at the insult to her feminism, "We're heading down now, time to break up into team channels." "Fireteam Glamour, signing off," Crag stated just before the three clicked out of our channel. "Pfft, Glamour?" Sierra snickered, "I wonder how long it took them to convince Crag not to change their team name." "Aw man! We still need to come up with a Fireteam name before Zavala blows a fuse for ignoring protocol!" I shouted worriedly. "Oh you'll think of something," Sierra assured me. "FIRETEAM FLEX!" Drew bellowed. "Like I said," Sierra sighed, "YOU'LL think if something, not Drew." "And why can't you help, Sierra?" I asked sourly. "FIRETEAM DESTROYERS!" Drew spouted. "Because I don't care enough," Sierra responded snidely. "You're no fun," I muttered. "FIRETEAM PURPLE REIGN!" Drew continued listing suggesting. "Really Drew?" John sighed disappointedly, "I expect more from you. I expect names like Fireteam EXOllence and Fireteam ADREWnaline." "Those were already taken..." Drew told us sadly. "Don't encourage him," Rush sighed. "FIRETEAM DOMINANCE!" Drew resumed his shouting. "I swear, his names are getting worse," Sierra grumbled. "B-But, I came up with that one..." Sally's hurt voice spoke up. "Uh oh," Sierra said worriedly. "Hey guys the round is starting!" I interjected, Sierra letting out a relieved sigh at the distraction. ______________________________________ Yes everyone, Ghosts have names.
