The Path We Choose Ch13: El Invierno.

"What have you done?" a deep voice asked. "To my ship!" it finished. Soren whirled around to find Geren standing there, looking at the Maverick. "Thank goodness! I can't believe I found you!" Soren exclaimed. "You found me? I found you!" Geren retorted. He indicated Myra. "What happened to her?" "As soon as we got here, she started freaking out, screaming about how she couldn't go back. The Fallen attacked. We launched the escape pods with Moron and Sully, but the Fallen got to where they landed. Then in the crash Myra must have hit her head on something." Soren said. "I know why she got scared." Geren said. "Are you going to explain?" Soren asked after a few seconds. "She never wanted anyone to know. But under the circumstances, I think you should know, since we're going into that Fallen camp." Geren said. They began walking towards the valley. "This is, as the guardians call it, La trampa del invierno, Winter's snare. They shoot down ships then use the passengers as slaves to mine. This is one of the largest veins of deuterium on Venus. It's fuel for their ships." Geren said. "What does this have to do with Myra?" Soren asked. "She was born here. She never knew her parents. According to her, some old woman took care of her, until one day, the old woman was killed because she wasn't working hard. Myra lived here until she was twelve." Geren said. "I never knew she had to live through that. How did she escape?" Soren asked. "The Fallen decided to cut the rations to the slaves one day. Her body couldn't take the lack of food and fell unconscious. The Fallen were furious. So they took her to be executed. They tied her to a post stuck in the ground on the beach. When the tide came in, she would be burned alive in the acid water. But it had been raining. She managed to slip out of the ropes and got away. She managed to get to the Ishtar Sink and found a group of guardians. But they told her to go away. They had more important things to do than help her. Eventually she found an awoken patrol who took her back to the Reef. They raised her." Geren finished. "Wow." Soren said. "I wish my origin story was that cool." They had reached the valley. They climbed to the top and looked down. Hundreds if Fallen and slaves milled about. "There!" Soren yelled. Down among the tents the Fallen used, two captains held Moron and Sully. A large baron stood talking to them. "What's he saying?" Soren asked. "I don't know! Now will you shut up? You're going to give us away!" Geren hissed. Suddenly, the baron reared back, and plunged his sword into Sully's stomach.
