The Path We Choose Ch10: Royalty.

Geren dropped the gun, and it was sucked out into space. He grabbed the light fixture hanging from the wall, as all of the guards were sucked out the window. He hung onto Lila, while she screamed in rage. The ship's automatic containment protocol activated and a force field appeared over the window. Geren and Lila dropped to the floor. Lila rolled over, coughing. She looked at him. "Why did you save me?" she asked. Geren looked at her as he clambered to his feet. "I'm asking myself the same question." he said. With a practiced movement, he wrenched the light fixture off the wall and conked Lila over the head with it. She dropped like a stone. "I'm sorry. But I can't have you following me. I don't care about your little job as a mercenary. Just leave me alone, and I'll leave you alone. Aaaand I'm talking to an unconscious woman. Great job Geren." He said. He turned and ran. After a few minutes he found an elevator. "Take me to the escape pod bay." He said. The elevator shot downward for three levels, then stopped. The door slid open. He quickly sized up the room. It was a large hallway with escape pod bays running down the hall. Geren ran to the nearest pod, and jumped in. The doors slid closed, and cylinder began moving downward. With a loud clank, the pod locked into place. "Eject pod? Yes or no." appeared on the digital interface. Geren pressed, "yes." The pod jerked, and then launched into space. Geren pressed the distress signal button. "Now, the wait." "Watch it!" Soren jerked the Maverick to the right, barely avoiding the rocket. "They're sending reinforcements!" Sully yelled from his position next to the sensors. "Whoa!" Soren yelled as multiple bullets ricocheted off the hull. "Stupid guardian ships. Why can't they leave us alone?" Myra griped. The Maverick dodged another rocket and dove towards the City. Soren yanked the joystick back and just barely avoided crushing a building. "Stay low! They won't risk shooting towards civilians!" Myra yelled. Soren leveled off. The guardian ships stopped firing but did not break off pursuit. "We need to get out of here. How long will it take to get out of the atmosphere?" Myra asked Soren. "About two minutes." he replied. "Activate the cloak." she said. Soren pressed the button and the ship faded away. "Now, get us out of here." She said. "With pleasure." he replied. The Maverick shot upwards into the atmosphere, then into space. The ship launched into warp, and they were gone. "Alright. What happened?" Myra asked, looking at Moron and Soren. Soren pointed at Moron. "It was all him, I swear!" he said. Moron looked down, guiltily. "I might have called Zavala a Smurf. And I might have gone on a rant about how all guardians are devils and thieves, and how the vanguard should all crawl in a hole and die." he whispered. Myra shook her head. "Whatever. I'm going to get some sleep. Wake me when we get there." she said, as she tossed the holotablet in front of Soren. He entered the coordinates in the computer and leaned back in his chair, anticipating a long trip.
