Conventional Weapons Part 3 [Miniseries]

So we went deeper into the installation. At the time, it was just the four of them. The others hadn't come along. There was no Vanguard Assault Lance. I want to assure you of the fidelity of my memory banks in something I quoted earlier. Ricochet called the team Orion. The four of them. Fire Team Orion now consists of Ricochet, Eagle, and Fox. But if you wish to know something of their origins, take note of the fact that Fire Team Orion already existed. Fire Team Orion predated their becoming Guardians. Or maybe it didn't. That's for another time. We went deeper. They mowed through Fallen with an impunity that can only be produced by those who truly love making war. Cheering for detonations which silenced multiple foes simultaneously. Fault found a Heavy Machine gun and fire an entire belt of ammunition into a single Captain. Then he tossed it to Ricochet, who repurposed it to chase down a dozen Vandals with stealth fields engaged, beating the last to death with its stock. "Hey uhh, can we hurry this up? I need to be back by nineteen hundred, City time. Got a date." Bishop remarked, during a pause during which they were reloading and he was attempting to figure out how an arc blade he'd relieved from a Dreg worked. "Aww dude, you're trying to hook up with the future chicks already?" Fault scoffed. "I mean really, what if they have space herps or something?" "Is it one of the blue ones? I bet it's one of the blue ones." Ricochet quipped through a short laugh. His baritone and outright violent behavior belies the fact that, most of the time, he's joking. "She doesn't have space herps. I'm just trying to taste the rainbow man---and Ric shut your dumb ass up, I saw you with that Warlock chick last time we were at the Tower. You can't even judge. And she's a Warlock. Ay-kay-ay, probably a hell of a lot smarter than you. Into discoveries and shit. Not discovering how to destroy shit." Bishop countered. They were all loaded. They were moving again, on Ricochet's lead. They'd just blown open the sealed door of the long abandoned lift shaft and were currently employing various means to make their way down the sheer drop without dying. I could have helped them, but they didn't ask for help. "Look I wasn't judging. Don't get all snippy with me. And Fox is cool people. She was showing me her---" Eagle cut him off. "I do not want to know what she was showing you." Ricochet spoke over him. "---DIARY about things she's discovered. She's a Guardian like us. Fresh from the dead, though she's been here longer. Could be useful. And why would she be outta my league, but your blueberry isn't out of yours man?" "Because," Bishop replied plainly. "I'm in every league." "You're a greedy bastard is what you are." Fault mumbled. "Look. We were dead. I'm just trying to make sure everything's in working order." Bishop sounded as though he thought his reasoning was sound. The rest of them groaned. At this point they were gathered at another door leading out of the lift shaft, with Fault busy rigging a few captured grenades near the seam which they were undoubtedly about to detonate as a means of entry. Again, I could have helped. But they didn't ask. They never ask. They just blow things up. The banter continued. They breached the door. They spilled out into a firefight. Bishop learned to use his new knife, and demonstrated his proficiency by making Dregs out of a few Vandals. We were making swift progress down toward the armory. I could only presume that their plan was to hinder the Fallen progress on the station, or eliminate them entirely before searching for artifacts. I have since learned to stop assuming the intentions of these Guardians to be anything other than pure attrition. For the sake of sating your curiosities, know this: They are not so... easily influenced by modern pageantry and circumstances as others. These Guardians and those they influence are almost single minded purposed for a far simpler breed of warfare. And they are very good at it. As the heavy slug round pierces the head of the Warlock and prevents a devastating and complex use of the Void, I have found that they are a far more... conventional asset which is by proxy horrifyingly effective. Two levels down, nearing their goal, we encountered and Archon backed by a rather powerful Servitor. I thought this might be the end of my dangerously brazen Guardians. And by extension the end of me. By all means the Archon's powerful weapon, ability to rapidly translocate, and ability to create volatile lingering Arc fields should have been the end of us all. It should have. But it was not. Did they kill it? No. The atmosphere of Venus killed it. I'll explain...
