IT'S TIME!

It's time..... For grammar lessons. This forum is riddled with illiterate monkeys and illegible posts. Now perhaps some of this is autocorrect, but I sense the two greatest portions of misspelling are made up of those who are: A). apathetic B). Illiterate potatoes That being said, use this as a helpful guide as to which words bear the proper definition for your plight. This is not a satirical post, and I don't need your criticisms and assholistic comments, so move along if that is your goal. You're- You are (Ie; You're quite lovely today) Your- It belongs to you (Ie; Is that gun yours?) Ur- A place in the ancient Middle East It's- It is (Ie; It's using an axe!) Its- Belonging to is (Ie; Look at its face!) Their- It belongs to them (Ie; Is that sword theirs or ours?) They're- They are (Ie; They're going to kill Crota) There- A location (Ie; look over there!) We're- We are (Ie; We're going to kill Crota) Were- The past-tense of are (Ie; Were you online last night?) Where- A location (Ie; Where are you?) Are- A state of being (Ie; We are here) Our- It belongs to us (Ie; This land is ours) R- The letter R. From liefglinde:
How about a lesson on proper apostrophe use? As in apostrophes are used to signify possession and for contractions, not for plurals. Improper: We did a lot of strike's. Proper: We did a lot of strikes. Improper: The raids difficulty was increased. Proper: The raid's difficulty was increased.
From AJ Clock Work
Spare a thought for the humble comma! So many seem to fire the comma shotgun so that sentences and paragraphs become littered. The poor little bugger is overworked and confused about its role. Primarily its place is in the listing of things which is simple, efficient and easy to remember. There is an omission of the Oxford comma there as it has largely fallen out of common usage. Then you can, if you are so inclined, use it to create a sub-sentence before continuing the flow. Creating pauses, separating speech and quotes are also places where the comma likes to be. Don't just use it because you had to take a breath. Most of all enjoy the freedom to criticise :) Constructively where possible.
So, any others I need to cover? Feel free to comment if there are and I'll update this post. I promise, if you use these properly, your posts will be taken much more seriously. Edit: Trolls, bring it on. This post was designed to lure you in and educate you, so if I have to beat you over the head with my board of education, I shall. Edit #2: The amount of legitimate hate mail I am receiving over this is fantastic. I'm getting 3-paragraph essays about what a prick and asshole I am, and how I'm not so much better than everyone else. Keep it coming. I brought plenty of meat for the trolls.

    • You spend 2 times longer reading over your posts so that you can make sure that you're not making a dick out of ones self... Here are a few things I would like to point out here. "Now if you're going to reply OP, if you are literate you should not have a problem reading this as it took be a little longer to use correct grammar for you. But if you are no literate, I will use my dyslexic brain to understand what it is you are trying to say to me, then I will reply and take you just as serious as if you had written it in the queens English." To anyone that has taken time to learn my mothers tongue (English) as a second, third... Etc language, and still struggle with grammar. Thank you... Thank you for learning our language, thank you for trying to explain yourself or a subject, however you feel easiest. If you are a friend of mine I will help you learn English and correct you kindly. If you have learning difficulties, you have every right to say what you want how you want it. Most of us on this forum are thankful for the blood that has been spent to speak the words that we wish and no one can tell you that you are wrong. Freedom of speech is relative to the expression, not the words that you use. 1f u C4n r34d th1s 7h3n 6ood on y0u, 1f y0u c4n7 7h3n y0u 5h0ud l00k ou751d3 th3 80X!!!!!! To the original poster, maybe you should think about your audience and get of the high horse that you sit on. Maybe you went to private school, or were lucky to have a good education. Whichever it is that has lead you to be the chauvinistic arse that you are now, I suggest you take yourself more seriously. Look at who you are and how you want to live your life. Would you like to be the guy that always corrects people when "he" thinks there doing something wrong. Or can you be the guider that can teach others "WHEN" they go wrong, Telling someone that because they have made a spelling mistake it invalidates their "expression, or argument" you're being, arrogant by thinking you're more intelligent because you know the difference between your & you're... Pathetic. Give humankind a frigging break, once again if English is not your first language, thank you for learning it!! Rant over

    • Plural possessive - the comma comes at the end of the pluralized word (e.g., The sum total of all the strikes' rewards was 18 strange coins)

Why did you insult monkeys? A monkey has a better chance of typing a coherent message than half the posters in this forum. You should apologise to the monkeys. ;-)

        • My favourite part; Ur - an ancient place in the Middle East. I do find though, that the people who mock you are most likely the ones that make these mistakes. They put it down to laziness, but in actual fact, they haven't realised their error or they're too afraid to ask for help, with grammar such as this, when it should be considered as basic English. Some of the responses that I have read, taunted you as being obnoxious or above your station. What some people don't realise, in the very nature of what they are saying. 'Who gives you the write to correct me'. It also could be said. They have no right in telling you what you can't write. The laughable parts of one of these threads is the belittling threats that occur, which only inherit-ally belittles the colourful critique. You have every right to draw an informative thread, the only issue here lays with the reader, as they perceive it too close to their heart, take offence and cannot contain their emotion. If you want to mock this thread, maybe you should see a therapist for your sensitive and behavioural issues, so that you understand that opinions are as light hearted and negotiable as choosing your favourite meal from KFC. Enjoy.

                    • You put a lot of time and effort into teaching a computer game forum, of absolute complete strangers, proper English... Lol think about that for a second, how much time you wasted, and now how much of your day you've spent reading replies and arguing the point... Go do something useful man, -blam!- me!

                        • Thank you sir for posting this. The idiots on this forum amaze me at times. How in the hell do some of them make it into the workforce? They can't even hold a proper conversation. Good lord, all phones have spellcheck and make suggestions. Same goes for PC users. Your machine is way smarter than you. Use it for what it's there for. That is to make you not seem like a complete idiot and may have some brain cells left.
