Any advice for a non PvP player who wants to move towards PvP

So I mainly PvE but I feel like I'm missing a whole part of the game. Sure I've been in a few matches but unless I'm with a half decent team, I do very poorly. Is there any advice from PvPers out there? I'm not very adept with the fusion rifle but I hear they're the weapon of choice for beginners? Correct me if I'm wrong. EDIT: Thanks to everyone for the very useful advice. I'll give crucible a go and hopefully I'll see some improvement over the next few days. I'll let you know :)

  • Use your primary to build accuracy. I'm not bashing specials, but if you use specials the whole game, you will build zero skill. Unless you use a sniper. Those will also greatly improve your accuracy.

  • 1. Don't take it seriously. Until you get used to it, just pretend everyone you see moving around is just an NPC. 2. Play with friends whenever possible. Like pve, it's more enjoyable with comrades. 3. Pay attention to each time you meet a challenge, and learn from it to develop new habits.

  • Also keep special ammo drop areas in sight. Not necessarily to use but to pick off the person trying to use them. :-)

Watch some streamers or some YT videos to see different tactics being used(wish you luck is a very good player). Learn map control, map spawns, heavy spawns and know when to leave a fight when you're at a disadvantage. Always shoot the head and know when to be aggressive and when to be defensive. Almost forgot pay attention to the radar and listen to when supers are being popped. Stay by teammates and don't rush unless you have the advantage on a flank.

  • as someone who is slowly but surely improving their pvp kd (i now solely play on my warlock in pvp): 1) go slow - rushing in and around will lead to you being overrun rather quickly 2) if you do end up on flashing red and there is an escape route, USE IT - better to go away and regen your heath than give them points 3) look at alternative routes round the back of the enemy, good chances doing this you will get a couple of kills in before you can quickly retreat, regen the health and go back around the other way 4) Radar - its your best friend 5) if you notice an enemy is running after you when you are making a retreat, go around a corner - your health should have regened by this point, turn to face the direction they are coming from and move in for the kill 6) Grenades - you have 2 options depending on how you want to play: 1 - use nades such as solar grenade, pulse etc to force your enemy to move out to you or towards team mates. 2 - if you choose to be ultra aggressive - use stickies such as tripmine, flux, fusion 'nades. Key to this is not to just through them so quickly as you want to be able to use them tactically to benefit your team or to get you the kill. 7) Headshots - although this i feel just slowly comes together over time 8) Maps - you just have to learn the hotspots i'm afraid - again this is just a matter of practise. 9) Blue/green equipment - dont be so quick to discount them e.g all the blue gauntlets tend to have increased reload speed of a specific weapon class - always have them in stock just to stick on for normal crucible (don't do this in Iron Banner). Use the armor that is going to benfit your build the most 10) (perhaps most important) Don't actively seek revenge kills, this will more often than not lead to you getting killed by the same person over and over, you will get frustrated and you will grow to dislike pvp. Just shrug it off and continue

Use auto rifles, shotguns are nice to have you could also use a fusion rifle but don't hug onto it the whole game. The radar helps tremendously..when I first started playing crucible I sucked. Like I'm talking about bottom of the list suck. Until I realized there was a radar..I've been at the top 3 ever sense. Shoot any enemy you see. It should be pretty obvious but shoot. Always be moving, now you want to be moving because if you stay at one place for too long chances are someone will pass by and find you. Move, but be careful around edges or while in doors because someone could be sitting around crouching Crouch when your not moving. You don't disappear on the radar completely but you blink on the radar ever 5ish seconds. Learn the maps. Try to learn the maps, over time you will eventually learn them but if you want to take the time then start playing around and running around the maps Use your super every chance you get. It doesn't matter what class you are, if your a titan and you have a bubble shield, use it. If your a warlock and you have a nova bomb, use it. Don't wait until you see multiple enemies to use something like a nova bomb or fist of havoc. If you see an enemy just kill him. Use your blade dancer while indoors and you see people on your radar. Be smart about what your doing Stick to teammates. This doesn't mean steal there kills, this means stick to teammates and watch there back. If you do this and you get in a tight situation, your teammate could always turn around and help you out. Get objectives, if you are one who can't find a lot of kills, try to stick to objectives. It'll get yours scores up and your helping the team tremendously! Don't double jump in situations, why? Because when you jump, you reveal yourself to EVERYONE. Your up in the air just waiting for someone to take you down. Instead, run and crouch.

    • Yeah, take cheap kills if you want to be good. one hit weapons, supers, melee. seriously though, stick with your teammates and try never to be outnumbered. if you go against more than one at a time your odds of winning drastically go down.

    • Are you a good shooter or a poor one? If you're a tip top shooter grab a thorn or last word. Poor shooters should look to the vex. If you don't have a vex a vanquisher 8 will suffice. Lead with a grenade that does damage over a large area. Many double and triple kills will be had tossing a grenade into a control point only to follow up with your primary. When low on health just run away, but not too fast. Bait the guy. Make him chase you; be waiting with a shotgun. Use a shotgun. I'll assume you're not good enough with the radar to correctly use a fusion rifle. Don't use a sniper, yet. Once you learn the high traffic areas then you can pick one of those up. Play more. This is essential to learning the maps. Your class doesn't really matter and neither does your set up. If I can go positive with a level 2 warlock lacking a super or a heavy weapon then any set up you have should suffice. do not rely on the perfect setup, weapons, or armor. rely on your situational awareness and only get into gun fights you have an absolute advantage in Do not chase. Ever. Do not start gun fights unless the enemy is unaware. Wait for them to come to you'll have the advantage every time. These are my noob tips. I'm not perfect and I was a lot better at halo 3 than I am at Destiny so please don't take my kd to heart.

      • learn the maps. learn to defend the different areas of the map depending on the angle you are taking. play smart and dont rush into a shootout. crouch. use specials. learn your special weapon strengths. change your character build to suit your play style (i prefer full armor and agility). play a lot of crucible to figure out all of the above.

      • 1. Get that heavy ammo when it comes! Enemies will have rocket launchers so be careful. 2. Respect each guns range, don't be afraid to abandon a firefight cause your gun is out matched. Shotguns stay inside, auto rifles keep mid-range, and scouts are best at long distances. 3. Use cover often, pop in and out to confuse the enemy or to regen. Good luck out there!

      • Alright, I main a Hunter so I will focus on your Hunter. First thing's first, why is your toughness so high up? You should be maxing out your agility stat, even for PvE. Put all the points up into agility, and the rest can be divided however you like among toughness and recovery. Do not use invisibility perks besides on the Arcblade in Crucible. They are completely useless since people can still see you. Use Hungering Blade instead of Stalker so you can quickly recover when you are in a melee situation or using Arcblade. What is the point in the higher jump? It slows you down, and you get less control over it. Use the more control double jump, and when you master it, Blink. You will need quite a bit of practice to use Blink, it's a bit hard to use, but very useful for juking players. Finally for your Bladedancer subclass, use the melee that gives you quick regen. Again, invisibility is useless as people can still see you, and often times when you melee the other guy will just melee back and still kill you, and you will have lost your melee ability for another minute or so. The quick melee regen gives it back to you after about 5 seconds or so, so you can use it constantly without having to worry that it's not charged yet. The Blink strike is very useful if you run a close quarter setup, as you can surprise an unsuspecting guardian by lunging MW2 Commando Pro style at him with a shotgun. It is one of the longest ranged melees not counting the throwing knife so chances are you can melee someone before you even get in range of his melee. As for guns... Never, never use that Super Good Advice. You probably already know this, but just in clase you don't, do not use that gun. Any blue or even green will replace it, and it takes up your exotic slot. Think that's it. Just keep in mind the agility on your Gunslinger as well if you intend to use that for PvP and you're golden. Good luck!

Get a good AR (shadow price or Vanquisher) something with good impact... MG with good stability. Don't care for fusion myself (can't get used to the firing lag). Can't go wrong with a good shotgun for close encounters either. Move slow, learn the maps and see what other players do. I'm a PvE guy, and I have a lot of fun in crucible now. (Only started PvP for the marks to breakdown faction gear... now prefer it to PvE) Stay thirsty my friend...

            • 1)Move with but away from your team. Remember not to bunch up in case a super is launched and destroys all of you. 2)Unless you have a super don't go after groups of more than 2 3) If you ever need to reload in the middle of a firefight, throw down grenades or switch to a secondary

                • Me and my friends just moved to PvP. Our solution was to field a full team or at least four of us. Makes the experience a absolute blast whether your annihilating people or being destroyed it is better with a team for sure. You will have more fun and variation in Iron Banner though as regular crucible forces the player to utilize a specific weapon set.
