Button Mapping for Console Games

Yes, more options is a good thing

No, it would be abused

Button mapping is something that I believe all games should have regardless of platform or genre, I can guarantee you that at some point in your life there has been a point in a game when you've thought "I wish I could use this button as but there was no way to do so. I believe that this is a problem within the video game industry that needs to be addressed, there is a double standard in the industry that PC games need mapping (they do btw not trying to say otherwise) while it seems that they go out of their way to not include it in console games. I do not claim to understand their reasoning but I do think that whatever reasons they do have are negligible when compared with the reasons to the contrary. This hurts gamers. That may seem dramatic but the main point of video games is to give you an experience, and the ability to have personalized and fluid controls that work for you can do nothing except heighten the experience. Also however small of a population it is, this hurts disabled gamers the most. For those that have lost fingers or even an entire arm, most default control schemes are not practical (yes there are many who still play, but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't be easier). Why should we make it harder for people to play games when they already have a disadvantage? Not saying they can't be good at games, (hell, most of them are probably better than me) I'm saying that it definitely doesn't make it easier for them. These are my thoughts on the matter, please share your opinions (if you want to, I won't lose sleep over it). DISCLAIMER - The above statement does not apply to PC gamers, please do not feel obligated to mention that PC has had this feature for years (we know, all I want is equality), it would add nothing to the conversation except start a flame war. Also there are of course games that are exceptions to the rule, either games that have mapping and games that need to have certain controls whether it's the game's gimmick or it enhances the experience (Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is a perfect example of it done right).

 • I would also like the add to that the ability to mess with certain things colours, for example having a colour blind mode. A great example of this is fallout 3 where you can choose from a variety if colours for your aimer and menu text (this included the pit boy letter colours. Pokemon use to have that option as well but in recent games they have taken it out, now they do blue text on a white background for important information, but i am colour blind and part of my colour blindness is not being able to see light blue on white, so all the important information is essentially whited out to me, good thing it isnt a hard game to understand, but i dont know why this feature was removed, or why it seems we went through a time when all games did it and now almost non are doing it any longer.

 • It's absolutely necessary. the only excuse i can see if that it would confuse people in tutorials or games that say "Press X to jump" every time you find a ledge.

 • You should see how customizable the controls for Murder Miners are. Fully remappable and tons of aiming options.
