In the grimoire cards it suggests that the traveler wasn't alone, he had "brothers and sisters". Which they died at the garden by "it" (presumbly the darkness). When the traveler passed he/she created the ghosts but he/she could have also became a ghost as it talks about being a nameless stone in a sea of nameless stones. If this true than that means that the traveler is a ghost among us, also it means that they cannot technically see. It talks about how the traveler wishes it could see itself but does not have sight.
