This is a terrible argument for taking a feature away because it doesn't cost anything to keep it in. It's not like it completely broke the reputation and marks system because, as you say, its not as effective as playing the crucible. Having more options and ways to play is always better. It might not be a good option for you, but it might for somebody else.
