The party leader just exits the game entirely. This glitch has nothing to do with unplugging ones ethernet cable or a host booter program.

You don't need to unplug to disconnect from the servers. You just have to quit the game or eject the disc. That disconnects you from bungie servers. If you change characters it also manipulates the servers.
