The best F2P games allow you to play through the entire game without ever purchasing anything. They also tend to be some of the most profitable game around. You can play DFO without ever spending a dime. You can purchase cash shop items from other players using in game currency. I spent anywhere from $200 - $300 on DFO and did so happily. I spent just $50 on Destiny, and I feel cheated.

  • But they only give you that "free" content because they are supported by sales. They're not offering it out of the kindness of their hearts. When people play the game completely free that is their prerogative, but then they fail to acknowledge that they're leeching off the support of others who are paying to keep the game going. Without them, there is no "free" game. It's a matter of a different business model, that's it. F2P games offer content first to build loyalty first in hopes of profiting later. You simply get to sample the game content before deciding to buy anything. The average game like Destiny is a buy first, hope you still like it later. What you find has more value is completely subjective. All the hours I've spent on Destiny makes my $50 worthwhile.

  • And how much money has Destiny made off their sales vs this F2P? Do you not feel that the first expansion could have had a bit more content?

    1) Making $500mil in sales does not equate to 500mil in "profit". So I hope you're not using that as a raw number for comparison. We have no idea how much of that is going to which parties involved. 2) The expansion was already in the works before these figures were out, so if they already had an allotted team and timeline, then they may have done just what they needed to do, and can do, within their criteria. Those figures do not immediately affect development that is already in progress and on specific timelines. 3) I, like many others, would definitely have liked to see more content. But given that I can put in as much time into the expansion as I have for other games that I've paid more for, it is acceptable to me. 4 ) with that said, I also believe that if they don't make major improvements to future expansions, then these small updates will eventually grow stale and negatively impact the future of the game. So, we shall see.

  • Another note... (sorry for multiple posts but wanted to make sure you got a chance to see this). "Bungie might've spent the time between the release of the game and to the release of this DLC to tweak, test and improve the content but the problem is that the DLC has basically no filesize. Why? because IT'S ALREADY IN THE GAME AT LAUNCH!" -linkenski Truest thing I have seen on this topic.

  • But that wasn't entirely true. As stated in many other posts, there was a huge 2 gig download a few days, or a week, prior to the actual launch of the expansion.

  • thats fair, but those are patches covering bugs, exploits, and possible game breaking issues. All game developers do this for free as it is part of their responsibility.

Yes fixes were included in that patch but I'm talking about the 2 gig download, not the multiple smaller ones in between. There was one large download and install at some point prior to the exp. As fixing exploits and making minor updates is mostly appending code, there's no way that 2 gig file was all code just for that. There had to have been other content like new 3d models and a ton more code. It's up to you what you choose to believe, but my experience tells me they added a lot of new content at some point.
1) Making $500mil does not equate to 500mil in "profit"
'Destiny' Crosses $500 Million On Day One.... Sooo, Im going to assume you didn't notice that small detail.
2) The expansion
I apologize i didn't elaborate as I assumed that this would be obvious... actually no I'm not going to waste my time. You really don't know how a business works do you? Either way "half assed" is a HUGE understatement to describe the state of the game much less the state of the "expansion." In a nut shell, there is no excuses that can be made for this, however it is very admirable of you to stand up for Bungie even in their darkest moments. As stated elsewhere in this thread, "the game and its engine is as vast as an ocean, but as deep as a puddle." Side note: I apologize for being a douche-canoe. Nothing towards you but this game has suck a major stick up my butt. Bungie has more than let me down this time. I have been a major supporter of everything Bungie for the longest time.
3) ...it is acceptable to me.
That's fair, but this is a general statement and the state of player reviews... says it all.
4 ) with that said...
I love you, and this is the first thing I agree wholeheartedly with.

  • I should make it clear that I'm not closed mindely defending bungie. I have worked as a software developer before so I simply have a different perspective on the issues. You have every right to express your concerns. I'm merely taking a step back and let Bungie breath a little because I know software/game development has its difficulties especially with Activision breathing down their throats. So I'm providing another perspective. After all they made a gam with great gameplay and potential. They just need to expand on their content. But my tolerance will only go so far, and as stated, if they don't make major improvements down the line that would make this a much better and more unique game, then I'm moving on, and I'm sure so will others.

  • You can play the entire DFO game and never spend a dime. That is start to finish, and all the content. That is not milking you. I happily spent hundreds of dollars on the game because they offered content that I liked and because they didn't try to force you to buy it. I spent less than a third of that on Destiny and I feel cheated. People that play for free are not leeches. The game is more fun when there is a community and people to play with. The free players provide that. I was a free player for several months myself, showing that free players don't always stay that way. You don't get a sample game. You get the entire game. Destiny is milking you, not game that gives you everything for free. That is not subjective.
You can play the entire DFO game and never spend a dime.
Yes you can, but you're missing the point completely of what F2P is all about. Just because people can play it free, doesn't mean that they are purely providing the game freely (out of the kindness of their hearts). They are absolutely banking on people to buy stuff in their game. They do this by building loyalty, as I explained. If EVERYONE played the game completely free, there would be NO F2P games. They just have a different business model than standard games.
People that play for free are not leeches.
They provide a community, but they alone do not support the game. In order to keep playing 100% freely, others have to buy stuff. So when you're taking advantage of other people's support, while not supplying any support of your own, what do you call that? I consider that leeching off of other people's financial support of the game. You could be more politically correct about it if you wish, but that's the basics of it. Free players are NOT the primary focus of F2P games. F2P games will initially focus on building the community first, then everything else is to entice sales. Like I said, they focus on a different business model, but it's still entirely business. If you somehow believe that F2P companies have some huge focus to provide things for free, you're naive. That's just the impression, but in the end, they are no different than Bungie/Activision where they need to pay their developers, and produce a profit. If there is no profit, there is no F2P game. You heard of the F2P Facebook game, "Restaurant City"? Yeah, they shut that game down because they lost retention and didn't turn as much of a profit as they use to. So the point is, regardless of what impression you get from an F2P game, their goal is to make a profit. They just do it differently than the standard Pay2Play games. They have a larger incentive to provide content first, build the community, then profit from that community with whatever sale model they come up with. Some companies may show that they care about their community better than others, but in the end, it's all about profit.
Destiny is milking you, not game that gives you everything for free. That is not subjective.
Did you intentionally change my wording around to suit your argument? This is what I said: "What you find has more value is completely subjective. " You personally find more value in playing DFO, and less so in Destiny. I personally find no value in playing DFO, because I'm not interested, but having spent numerous hours in Destiny, I find the price acceptable. That is what subjective means. Another difference is that standard games, like Destiny, you pay just once for the target content. That's it, no more sales of anything until next expansion. F2P games continually offer things you can buy, either to help with game progression and/or aesthetic purposes. There is NO LIMIT to what you can buy. You could spend thousands of dollars in the game, and they won't stop you. That's also considered milking you, because they're enticing you to buy as much and as often as you can. Just because you did it voluntarily and because you felt value for it, doesn't mean they didn't milk your wallet. I get that you're a fan of DFO and you want to defend them and all, but outside of your biased opinion, they are all companies that need to make a profit. So DFO's incentive to make that profit is to provide good content and milk players with in game purchases. That's it. They managed to entice you to spend hundreds of dollars, so they did their job well. Edit: for the record, I have no problems with F2P games and I too have spent lots of cash on those that retained my interest. Regardless, I still understand that F2P games are for profit. I'm also not saying Destiny is the best bang for the buck for everyone. Again, it's subjective.
