You don't have to wait till Friday for strike. You can do all the Eris quests aside from the Xur one and still get the quest in which Eris tells you to kill omnigul. A level 26 strike will unlock on earth. You can do the nightfall/weekly and still complete the quest.
P.s. The nightfall version is really REALLY brutal. Who thought it was a good idea to make it arc burn and make a wizard the final boss?

Are the quests just old missions, or is it the Crota swords on patrol.

But after those, the quests will just be killing unique hive ultras. Although all of them are just wizards/hive/acolytes ultras with a buttload of health and minions. Their names are different from normal hive ultras. "The eyes of crota" (Three acolytes) "The hand of Crota" (A knight) and I forgot the other but it was a wizard I'm pretty sure. After that, you're done with the quests and you can do the strike.
