But it shouldn't be, because the goals of each faction are not linked to the crucible.
If I wear a faction item in pvp or pve I get rep for that faction, so the marks earned should be spendable at those vendors, provided I have the rank.

The different crucible activities do have descriptions of the different factions. But I'm really playing devils advocate :p

As am I. The different patrol missions are sponsored by different factions as well.
