BNG: Why did you remove Materials for Marks?

When I 1st read the patch notes I was excited to see the addition of Marks for Upgrade Materials. Finally I would have something else to spend my excess Vanguard marks on. I always like when games offer you options. If you needed extra marks, you could exchange some materials, now if you need extra materials you could trade in some marks. Of course, that excitement was quickly dashed when I discovered that you REPLACED the (Materials for Marks) with the (Marks for Materials). Why? Do you guys have some personal grudge against choices and options? Why does everything have to be one way OR the other. Why won't you provide multiple options instead of limiting us to just one? Why can't you let your players decide what they prefer to do instead of forcing everything to be all or nothing? Instead of letting people choose if they want to play PvP or PvE, you seem to be trying to push people into both. * Why not just let people enjoy the parts of Destiny they love without punishing them for it? * By replacing the material exchange, people have no choice but to run the crucible if they want to purchase anything from the faction vendors. Where before, if you didn't want to run the crucible, you could farm some materials, trade them in for marks, than spend them on the faction vendors. Well, not anymore... I just don't understand. * Why couldn't you just remove the (reputation/glimmer) gains and leave the option to trade materials for marks? At an exchange rate of 5 to 1, would being able to swap one type of Mark for another really have been so bad? * * You provided so many great new ways to aquire extra materials, than took away the only other feature they could be used for. * Sony online store Xbox online store
Destiny is a next generation first person shooter featuring an unprecedented combination of cinematic storytelling, cooperative, competitive, and public gameplay, and personal activities that are woven into an expansive, persistent online world. I agree with op. Bungie, please stop removing options from the game. Stop closing off parts of the game to people who don't play PvP. Or make PvP worth playing by removing the RNG reward system and increasing the number of marks per match.

    • Why is that a problem marks for mats was a lazy persons way of doing things and its not like marks a hard to get anyway

I agree with the person who said this is the dumbest post ever. why should you have to enter into the crucible to get crucible gear? to get crucible marks? hmm idk, why do I have to raid to get the vex? why cant it just be a random drop from chests that get farmed, that would be fair right? why cant everything in the game be earned my mindlessly grinding. Hey while your at it, make the flawless raider trophy drop from chests too so I don't have to earn that either, why should I have to be involved with raiding just to get raiding specific trophies and rewards? honestly the only thing more stupid than your complaint is the bungie employee who thought of mat grinding for marks in the first place, when the current system of trading marks for mats is infinitely more understandable and useful. not to mention, what sense does it make that you gain player killing REPUTATION from turning in mats. by that logic the mailman who delivers footballs to the NLF should be more famous than any quarterback. "Hey man brought you some supplies, can I have some hardcore killer street cred now? its idiotic

        • Absolutely agree with this post. Luckily, I'd just turned in most of my materials just before the patch or I'd have been left with around 400+ of *each* material that are *now* next to useless because the armor/weapons I use commonly are almost all fully upgraded. I personally don't understand the need to purchase materials from vendors, at all. It's not like they were hard to get in the first place. You could easily grab ~50 of nearly any type in 30-45 minutes if you know where to look, or simply joined up with other folks doing the runs to find the nooks and crannies where the chests were. At any rate, it was easy to get enough when an armor/weapon upgrade required them. The chest farming groups are (were) one of Destiny's few social activities that didn't involve shooting each other in the head. Certainly seemed to be a lot less people in the patrols since the patch. So much for the point, dance, and wave conversations. Heh. Chest runs certainly took less time to generate 10 materials than it does to generate the 5 crucible marks now needed to buy 10 materials. So now instead of actually spending the crucible marks on Legendary items, which most people are probably only dismantling for shards/energy at this point, we're buying materials that could have easily farmed? *stupid* The only real reason to look for chests anymore is for the rare blue, and exceptionally rare purple, engrams for the Cryptarch but they went and nerfed the faction you get from handing those in too so now it takes even longer to level him up. *sad* I mean, *nobody* farmed chests for the green crap that just gets dismantled constantly, did they? If they wanted to get rid of the chest run, they could have simply had MOBs randomly drop materials, or had weapons and armor randomly produce materials during dismantling. Another fix I can see is to have vendors accept materials in exchange for energy or shards at a *reasonable* exchange rate.

        • and also the reason why it has to be one or the other is entirely obvious. if you can trade marks for mats, and mats for marks AND rep, then you could trade them back and forth infinitely to get infinite rep and therefor infinite mail packages with infinite purples, blues, crytarch XP, glimmer, ascendant mats, etc. possible to avoid another way, yes. but why? it would make no sense to do both, it made no sense to trade mats for marks in the first place. bravo to bungie for the best and most sensible fix to the game so far. now if we could just copy/paste spaceflight mechanics from a ps2 ratchet and clank game if nothing else then we would be doing great.

          • I have the same issue. Don't like PvP, glad to grind in PvE to get materials to buy from Faction Vendors. I was making progress towards Vanquisher VIII after buying Crusader I, but it looks like I'm now stuck.........

I didnt even know people even used the material exchange system. My friends and I all laughed at the concept since the payoff for hours of farming was so small, and it was much faster and funner to just earn marks in the cruicible or vanguard strikes.

                • I'm assuming that they removed this because of the potential to use marks in order to earn reputation, essentially. You could use marks to get materials, and then use materials to get rep, therefore resulting in much more rep gain for people who don't need marks for anything anymore. Frankly, I think this was a good change, and it was what the majority of players wanted. Myself and many others simply used our marks on legendaries just to dismantle then for ascendant materials (that we didn't even need), which I'm fairly certain was not the intention, so this is a good change for those players. That's not to say there are people disappointed, but you simply can't please everybody. As an example, they patched the raid exploits. Were people upset? Yeah, of course, but it was the right decision, and it had to happen. Same situation here, in order to please all the players, they would have to include both the transactions, but this would upset the balance and be an exploit that ultimately leads to shortened play time. Bungie knows what they are doing, although it might upset some, most of their choices are for the best.

Wow, this is one of the dumbest posts ever. You like that you can get mats for marks now, but can't understand why they got rid of marks for mats? If you are happy you have something to spend marks on, why the flying fk are you upset you can't accumulate more marks for mats? Quit being a self entitled dbag. Play crucible if you want faction gear.

                        • You do realize that in doing this, they would HAVE to Nerf the amount of materials you get for marks. Why? Look at what you get, 20 mats for 10 marks. What was the old system? 50 mats for 5 marks. 30 marks gets you 60 mats, 50 mats would get you back 5 marks, 60 marks gets you 120 mats, 100 mats gives you 10 mark's, and so on and so fourth. Technically, if you farmed a bit, you wouldn't ever have to play vanguard or PvP for marks. Lol. So when you look at it like that there only option would be to Nerf the amount of mats you get out of 10 marks. I'm not for this what so ever, please for the love of God delete this post and never mention it again. I am more than happy with never having to farm again. Also, if they had both, it would be far to easy to get gear... Farm a bit, buy some mats, trade in mats for marks, max out PvP and Vanguard, BAM, 2 pieces of legendary gear without doing anything basically. Think about the consequences before you go and ask for something. Because, now that this is out there, you have -blam!-ed us all over and frankly I'm offended.

I'm just replying in support of bringing back the previous option and having both. There was no reason to remove it as you would still be on the losing end if you tried to exchange one mat or mark for another. I mean if you traded 50 mays in you get 5 marks and a small amount of rep/glimmer. So you would need to trade in 100 just to get the 10 marks to trade in for 20 of some other material. Seems fine to me.

The game even contains meta-currencies in the form of black wax, ether seeds, etc. Is it this way for a challenge or is it this way to attempt to guide player actions on the game? Who knows, but a simpler system with no caps would suit this player.
