BNG: Why did you remove Materials for Marks?

When I 1st read the patch notes I was excited to see the addition of Marks for Upgrade Materials. Finally I would have something else to spend my excess Vanguard marks on. I always like when games offer you options. If you needed extra marks, you could exchange some materials, now if you need extra materials you could trade in some marks. Of course, that excitement was quickly dashed when I discovered that you REPLACED the (Materials for Marks) with the (Marks for Materials). Why? Do you guys have some personal grudge against choices and options? Why does everything have to be one way OR the other. Why won't you provide multiple options instead of limiting us to just one? Why can't you let your players decide what they prefer to do instead of forcing everything to be all or nothing? Instead of letting people choose if they want to play PvP or PvE, you seem to be trying to push people into both. * Why not just let people enjoy the parts of Destiny they love without punishing them for it? * By replacing the material exchange, people have no choice but to run the crucible if they want to purchase anything from the faction vendors. Where before, if you didn't want to run the crucible, you could farm some materials, trade them in for marks, than spend them on the faction vendors. Well, not anymore... I just don't understand. * Why couldn't you just remove the (reputation/glimmer) gains and leave the option to trade materials for marks? At an exchange rate of 5 to 1, would being able to swap one type of Mark for another really have been so bad? * * You provided so many great new ways to aquire extra materials, than took away the only other feature they could be used for. * Sony online store Xbox online store
Destiny is a next generation first person shooter featuring an unprecedented combination of cinematic storytelling, cooperative, competitive, and public gameplay, and personal activities that are woven into an expansive, persistent online world. • @ bungie; after just one day post patch, four out of top-ten trending feedback threads with more than 1700! Responses directly concern your obvious mistake here. Please admit to yourselves that you made a mistake and return the option of getting marks for farmed materials. You're really alienating your pve gamers here. I thought you said again and again this game is for everyone?

    • they should have a competitive crucible playlist where you get banned temporarily for losing 5 matches in a row or having a k/d under 1.0 for 5 matches or something. this way hardcore crucible players can avoid playing with weak teammates. you'll also get an increased chance in getting exotic loot and legendary engrams in the playlist too.

      • Because if they did not remove the materials for marks, then people will just keep buying materials from the vendor and exchange it with marks...

        • Since we cannot exchange materials anymore and we can only hold 200 per slot, what are we supposed to do when all slots are filled? Why are materials limited to 200 per slot? My Warlock has 1122 pcs of weapon parts. Why do I have to waste 6 inventory slots on the same amount of materials?

        • Now I have to wait a whole week every time I want to finish upgrading exotics? I don't accumulate very many coin. I don't really want more than one character. People with multiple characters are accumulating coins so much quicker.

I just started a new topic on this, but here's the short version. If you could both buy and sell materials from the faction vendors, you'd be able to trade Crucible marks for Vanguard marks (or vice-versa) at a 10:1 rate, exchange one material for another at a 5:1 rate, and spend marks to gain reputation at an effective rate of 40 marks per 25 rep. None of those things were possible before the patch, and it seems likely that one or more of them was a balance concern for Bungie. [EDIT: Beyond Evolution is right; converting marks to marks is 5:1 just like converting mats to mats.]

          • If not done incorrectly it would have made an exploit loop. Also getting marks is very easy as opposing to getting materials which is a tedious time consuming task.

            • When I found out that we could now buy materials with marks I had a plan to use the Crucible marks I wasn't planning on spending soon. I am building Vanguard Reputation first since I am further along on that road than Faction Rep. So the plan was to buy all the materials I could with crucible marks then sell them all for vanguard marks. Once I bought all the materials I found out I could no longer sell those materials at all so now I am stuck with materials I don't need. My point is that I play crucible a bit and wanted to convert those marks into Vanguard Marks in this manner. Since it takes 25 crucible marks to buy the materials to sell for only 5 Vanguard marks I thought it would not be seen as milking the system. Guess someone thought otherwise which is why we can no longer sell materials.

Huh. Now that I've thought about it, the old system was kind of novel, and I never thought that there was a part of the player base who did things this way. Huh... And I know that anyone with any dignity can't just rubber-band their controller and AFK in Crucible. But that seems to be the most efficient answer, and it kinda sucks. "The only move is to not play" Ripped the context of that quote completely.

              • I understand why they don't have both, but the major problem is the lack of PvE vendors. RNG is a nice bonus when it hits, but I prefer tje ability to buy from vendors since it gives me a clear goal to work towards. Either the factions need to accept Vanguard Marks, or Bungie needs to add more PvE vendors.

              • I have never (not even once) traded hard-earned mats for marks but have been overflowing with mats for a month. The change looks good to me. But still, I can see your point if you actually used that feature (but maxing the existing factions except pvp only takes about 3 days each).

Also, being able to store a massive amount of materials would make it hard for them to control the game economy. I.e. If a new set of weapons are released they want people to work this content over time, not gave what is effectively a vault of cash save and then have these people get bored again and want more Edit: this is now relevant because people are now rewarded with mats for doing bounties and the like, but they can't increase the price of crucible items because it is set for people who actually play crucible

                    • They got rid of it because it would be too easy to get Vanguard and Crucible marks. If you could buy 20 materials for 10 Vanguard marks, or 50 material for 25 Vanguard marks you could get a maximum of 20 Crucible marks in seconds assuming you were maxed out for the week. Did you guys really hate the Crucible that much that you would trade in 50 materials for a measly 5 marks? That's a total ripoff. LOL. I do believe this way is better, as PVP and PVE world's are now separated, only being linked by the Tower.

                      • I've been farming ascendant materials just to upgrade weapons and now I need to spend coins on them. just a big fu is all I hear from bungie. I try not to gripe on the forums but this update upsets me. I don't mind that they fixed their original game by putting barriers up to stop their bosses from falling off a ledge but seriously exotic coins to upgrade gear. Just break down an exotic and you'll get one. Fu I earned my exotics. I don't break them down. I use them.

                        • All I think is what happens is keep mark exchange like you said, but aet-up a glimmer exchange as well. I don't need marks or rep, I get it from strike playlists. U have no more general vault space so I. Either clutter my characters with unwanted materials or discard them. I don't need them but I collect them just b/c I can. But when I run out of room, it sucks. I like glimmer to buy synthesis from gunsmith. Please bring back material exchange. My pocket is clanking too much bow. :(

I think that it is utter crap that they have taken away the exchange for marks. I do some PVP and when I am near my cap of marks I just exchange spinmetal to max out my cap as spinmetal is easy to farm on the divide. But now one hand has giveth and the other has taketh away. With Bungie it is either or, not both.

                          • Well yeah the game may have its moments but look how easy it is to get material or marks and another thing think about when the next raid comes what happens when you really need the materials and not have them to upgrade all your weapons
