Plasma Screen HUD Burn-In

Destiny is console exclusive, which means almost all players play on a television, not a monitor. Many of these players play on plasma screens, millions in fact. The average play session of Destiny is logged by Bungie at 4 hours. I fall around that mark, and that's about all I've used my TV for lately, as I'm sure is the same for many players. This leads to a huge problem, one that may have already permanently damaged my near $3K TV, the HUD is burnt into my display. I'm a very proud owner of the "65in Panasonic VT60, and I paid a very pretty penny for it. Millions of others also playDestiny on plasmas, and the fact is no matter how "worn in" a plasma is, it is still prone to burn-in or image retention. Either can occur after a static image is left on the screen for an extended period of time, like say, playing Destiny for a few hours a day, with no other content appearing on the TV in between. From my recent average playtime, I now have a retained image of the bottom left HUD area burnt in my display; super bar, all 3 weapon slots, among blur where ammo is counted and so on. I left my TV wiping for 12 hours, and the image is still there. (Update 11/19) My TV has been wiping for almost 24 hours, and still has the HUD clearly burned in. (Update 11/20) My TV has been wiping for almost 48 hours straight. The HUD is still there, but instead of a dark gray shadow, it seems to be a tinge of pink. This is a bad sign) There is a simple solution for preventing this, and still being able to enjoy long play sessions. Battlefield 4 got this perfect right off the bat, they added the option to adjust HUD opacity in the video options. This completely stomped the possibility for image retention, and even after hundreds of hours of gameplay I never had a problem. For those who don't know, this option would make it possible to have your HUD slightly see-through so the pixels are being stimulated. This is a very big deal, and has the potential to ruin many plasmas, only from playing Destiny for an average play session, even with days in between. BUNGIE PLEASE, add a simple HUD opacity slider and put all your plasma owners at ease. Love, every Destiny player with a plasma. Please comment to get this noticed.

    • I honestly never understood why people would spend so much more money on a plasma, when they are subject to burn ins on the picture. From the research I've done LEDs are the better ones

    • Don't plasma screen TVs specifically have warnings against running video games to prevent this?

          • This is not a dev responsibility, this is a case of consumer being at fault; burn in has been a problem with plasma screens for years now, and any one who knows anything about TVs knows that this can occur, even with network emblems on tv, and knows how to prevent them. Your decision to buy a plasma screen without knowing the risks or your refusal to use methods to prevent it puts you at risk. Finally for anyone who hasn't realized this, plasma TVs are a horrible choice for gamers and if you use your tv primarily for this purpose you should buy LED LCD; it will save you money and give you better performance.

I have a 60" Samsung PNF8500 (current king of plasmas). I usually play long sessions of Destiny...maybe 8+ hours at a time. My Samsung does not have any burn in or ghosting issues with Destiny. It may have some residual artifacts for a minute or two afterward, but nothing beyond that. I can wipe it if I need to, but never had the need. I guess I've been fortunate. However, I enabled pixel shift when gaming...which may explain that. Had to disable pixel shift for Titanfall due to screen tearing though. Plasmas are officially dead now. Too expensive for Panasonic, Samsung, and LG to make 4K plasma units. They currently have the best 1080p picture quality compared to LED LCD and projection. Only OLED 4K brand new models have better picture quality right now. To OP: your VT-60 is awesome man. They were discontinued and sold out, so my only option was the new king...the PNF8500. Pretty similar. People that laugh at plasma just do not understand, which is fine.

              • No! If you have plasma, then you need to upgrade, because it was the same way with Halo and Plasma TVs. Plasma TVs are not meant to do anything g for longer than 5 hours, thats why they get crazy hot. Its not a hateful post, I'm just saying if you have plasma, you really need to switch to something else because it is going to only get worse.

              • Bungie isn't responsible to damage to your plasma. You are. Once you started experiencing issues with burn you should have stopped immediately. Asking Bungie to add an opacity system is great, but don't try to blame the issue with your tv on them.

                  • Plasma tvs are the least popular tvs on the market now. LEDS can achieve near perfect picture quality and not having to worry about burn in is with it

                    • You are not alone I have a St30 and encounter similar issues for awhile now. I wipe while in orbit and it helps some but a opacity option would be well welcomed. I turn my brightness really low that I have a hard time seeing during the dark areas of the raid.
