First encounter with Atheon - thoughts...

Big shoutout to the team who went through the VoG last night, more than half of us had never been and we went from start to Atheon, but couldn't tackle the the master of time. It was a lot of fun and a lot of learning, thanks to our Raid Daddy, DrGrimm for guiding us through and getting us 4 chests of stuff that we just couldn't get easily elsewhere. We didn't defeat Atheon (could maybe use some help with that again tonight), but here's my thoughts from that battle: The biggest challenge the team outside the portals had was those dang exploding harpy's, or supplicants I think they were called. We were consistently dying at their explosions. This morning I've watched a few youtube videos and see that the obvious answer is to stand on the pillars over the sensor plates, they don't explode because you aren't at ground level with them. They still shoot you, but they're fairly easily defeated in a gunfight. How simple. We went the whole night screaming and running from these things, but it looks easy when you just stand on the pillar and shoot them. This was IMO, the biggest oversight we had, and a primary reason we couldn't complete the battle. Lesson learned. The portal team: I was on both sides at varying times, and I'm not even sure I needed to be there, thesadmagistrate was a master with the relic and for the most part handled the baddies single-handedly while DZimm wiped out most of the oracles before I could even get my reticle centered on it. It was clear that there was no confusion here. The relic-holder takes care of the bad guys and cleansing, the other two, oracles first, and bad guys. Don't feel like we had much of a shortcoming here. Time's convex (or whatever it is when you can damage Atheon): We didn't really have this part organized at all, but mostly because we weren't prepared for it. The fact that we couldn't clear out the harpy's while the team was in the portal (because we didn't know about standing on the pillar) made life very difficult and distracting when returning from Mars or Venus. As a result, we didn't inflict too much damage on Atheon since we were trying to kill the Harpy's beside us. In the videos I watched, the portal team immediately ran either to the center platform or the rear wall in the center and unloaded on Atheon while the relic-holder had the shield active until the next teleport. Those things said, here's what I feel are the important takeaway lessons from the Atheon battle: 1. The team opening the portals needs to hop on top of the pillars above the sensor plates to take out the Supplicants. That should be the only job while the portal team is in the portal, and its high-priority. I think we spent too much time avoiding and trying to survive than proactively removing them before the portal team exited. 2. The relic-holder has a lot of responsibility and requires the most attentive person in the group. (good job magistrate!) Priorities are, inside the portal, keep the gunners cleansed and take out the 3 Vex. Cleanse again as you're exiting the portal and head to either the center platform or the rear center and keep that shield up until you're teleported again, rinse and repeat. 3. GOT to get fire focused on Atheon for those 30 seconds he's vulnerable. By taking care of #1 and #2 above, I think we could have been more focused on damaging Atheon. Unfortunately we were just too distracted by supplicants and reviving dead guardians to really challenge the big guy. That said, I understand I can start at Atheon now since that's where I left off. I'd be happy to have a group come with me and finish this today!

  • Definitely had a blast - well summarized, Kap! That was the first time I had faced Atheon (hadn't ever gotten past the first part, where you have to sync up those plates) and learned a lot myself. Shield took a while to get used to but once I got the hang of it, not that bad. Couple things I learned (for those that may pick up the shield themselves!) : - Jump + R1 was a good move, especially on the Venus side with the Minotaur. That guy is the biggest worry and sometimes I would struggle with him. By the end of it, one well-timed Jump+R1 was all that was needed to clear the Hobgoblins on Mars (definitely the easier side). On Venus it was a bit safer to let them start coming up the stairs before attacking, otherwise you risk getting stuck down with the Minotaur and you can't take too many hits. The hard part with that is managing the Mark that darkens the screen. Sometimes I would wait until the first cleanse comes off cooldown, but by that point the Minotaur would be right on the two people shooting the oracles and could cause problems. All that said, Jump+R1 can semi-stun the Minotaur so you can get a chain off. - Trust with shooters on Mark. It seems minor in hindsight, but it's important to develop trust between you and those shooting the oracles in regards to the Mark. By the end of it, I felt we had a good strategy. - Venus: Described above. Best case scenario is to kill the adds before having to pop cleanse as it can get harry quick when you are cleansing and a Minotaur is blinking towards everyone. Once initial cleanse/adds dead, go to Portal and wait for oracles to die (I would recommend not trying to melee oracles - I fell off the ledge once!). When oracle dead, cleanse and go out of portal. - Mars: Go to right of the block and wait for Hobgoblins to activate. Then just jump in with one Jump+R1. This would often kill all three - just melee the survivors. Go back up stairs and pop cleanse then go to portal, wait until done, cleanse, move on. - If you need a little extra firepower you can drop the shield, shoot some rounds, and pick up the shield. You have a good 4-5 seconds until everyone dies. Really shouldn't be needed, to be honest, but if things were tight on the adds might help that little bit. Just make sure to pick it up! I was only in the portals so I don't have much to say on the Supplicants. I watched some videos and saw something else. One person would roam between left and right, with that person standing on the pillar in the sync plate. The other two people would stand in the middle and kill the adds when they spawned. They spawned on both sides and would call them. Seemed to be pretty effective. I also know I had some issues when leaving the portals in that sometimes it would beam me back into the portal. Because of the screen blurriness/transition, it could be really confusing. I found myself sitting in a portal once going "What the hell is going on?". It sounds stupid but I found the best way was to just charge through the portal and keep going instead of going through portal and trying to orient yourself. - Titan Shield with +damage buff (Weapons of Light) + Time's Vengeance is a great combo on bursting boss down if we can sync that up. Was a fun group and hope to do it again. I thought we did pretty well once we got going. A lot of us were noobies on that fight and we had one pretty solid attempt. Can't wait to do some more!
