Until they make the factions worth something to belong to (see my post linked below) I have elected to simply rank in Vanguard. Of course each faction does have gear that is slightly different in the attributes (Intellect, Strength & Disipline - if I recall them correctly) so based on which of these you want that may sway your choice.
