Yeah, I've gotten maybe 1-2 ascendant shards out of chests over the entire run of my 27 hunter. I don't really farm anything though because ascendent mats are the limiting factor in upgrading any of my weapons. I'll have 50 helium filaments just over the course of playing the game by the time I get 6 AS.

You DO know that you can trade in stacks of 50 materials at the vanguard vendor for marks right? You can then buy a legendary and break it down for 1-5 ascendant material...just saying

Yes, I know this. The 5 marks that you get from 50 mats is a pretty low investment for me though. That's 650 collected mats (assuming no other income for marks) to get 1 piece of legendary armor. Since I only have an average of an hour/day to play (except weekends) I prefer to get my marks through the daily or tiger strike.

True, but you only get 5 marks for 50 mats, so it turns into quite a lot of gathering. As Alexander the OK pointed out it may very well be the fastest way to get your gear, but I prefer to spend my limited time in-game on other activities.

The fastest material farming I saw could max out your marks in about 6-6.5 hours. The fastest you can possibly get the same marks from crucible matches is about 8.5 hours. Strikes tend to be longer, but award more marks, so it all depends how quickly you're finishing them.
