In my experience it's all a matter of personal preference. The nerf for ARs I believe was lessening the range. They're intended to be used at close-mid range and they were doing too well at long range (which is supposed to be reserved for scout rifles and to some extent pulse rifles). Personally, I most often stick to my hand cannon. Love it...
