Somebody else mentioned WoW and its monthly subscription. I played that game for a long time at roughly £7.99 per month with new content taking a damn long time to come out (which again you were charged for).
The point is this game was hugely hyped up and they were well within rights to put a monthly charge on it, I would have still bought it.. others would have aswell I imagine.
Your negativity blinds you from the positive aspects of the game. Things can always be worse.

Bungie made the hype, look at the e3 trailer.... we didn't use our imagination and think we would have space dog fighting. They showed use a ton of cool interesting things, so they started this hype train.
