I think Two Betrayals is one of the best levels. It gives you a feeling of being a player versus the world - plus the awesome level design.

  • The 'Final Run' segment of Two Betrayals where there's that all-out battle between the Covenant and the Flood while you're caught in the middle and trying to get the Banshee is one of the most awesome battles I've ever played in a game.

  • You NEVER get anything like that today. Even Halo, despite having really good campaigns in general, has been slacking off since Halo CE. ODST was the closest that Bungie got to recapturing the openness and variety of CE, but other than that I can't say that any modern FPS title has an experience quite like that. Look at Call of Duty, Bioshock Infinite, Battlefield, Killzone, and so on - they all have one thing in common with regards to level design, it's linear as [i]shit[/i]. Crysis and Deus Ex are a welcome breath of fresh air that offer more than just a linear path to follow, but it's no secret that the FPS genre on the whole is almost creatively bankrupt in the level design department.

  • I love it as the first level of EvE encounters. AotCR's sublime environments also help. Thing is, I first truly appreciated Halo as a bandwagoner. I was too young to appreciate the design subtleties at first, and only when praise was heaped on it did I understand its greatness. As such, Two Betrayals felt like revisiting an old home, but dreadfully wrong, like a lot of visual stories (games, films, TV) do: Two Betrayals was darker, backwards and quiet in all the wrong places, and it was fantastically unnerving to retread those iconic, labyrinthine halls and snow fields the wrong way, in the dark.

  • Usually when developers reuse parts of levels I see it as lazy or just not good, but I'd be willing to make an exception as it truly feels like something unique. I'm really glad the magic was there in Halo 2.

  • I meant magic to mean the overall experience, not the reusing of levels. Should have made that clear.
