Should Proximity Chat Be Implemented As an Option?

READ BEFORE VOTING Destiny, Bungie’s newest exquisite videogame, is filled with breathtaking visuals and compelling gameplay, and that’s after only playing the Alpha and Beta versions, although there is one major flaw that’s been brought to my attention: Destiny lacks proximity chat, which is the ability to speak with other players whom are near you. Currently, players can wave to each other, dance with each other, and point at things “in a desperate, and futile, attempt at communication” (SoloPopo). Players can’t make new friends, talk about strategies, nor ask for assistance. With proximity chat, players can get to know each other and share their experiences they’ve had in Destiny. Maybe you just want to compliment someone’s awesome armor and be on your way. Players would be able to talk about how they’ll complete an event or where to find some loot. Imagine trying to strategize by pointing everywhere. Players would be able to ask for assistance during combat. Imagine fighting enemies with a few other players, and when you get cornered, all you can do is point at them and dance for your life. Destiny is based on the notion of being always-online and multiplayer. If everyone is a mute, then what is the point? As SoloPopo said, “It's ridiculous, and kills the immersion. Why are other players even in the game if you can't interact with them?” Being able to wave and point is fine if you don’t have a headset plugged in, but it should be optional, because being able to speak is a much better alternative. Proximity chat should be the next feature implemented in Destiny. In GameInformer's interview with Lars Bakken, Bungie's multiplayer lead, Bakken stated "We know that, not just in multiplayer, that in general, when you get into a game with someone that you don't know or someone that you've never seen before and may never see again, they have this power to completely destroy your entire experience and maybe ruin the game for you forever" (Manuch). If another player is being obnoxious and you want to disable proximity chat, you can simply switch between three chat settings: Proximity, Fire Team, and Off. This feature would also require the following settings. Chat Settings: Proximity - Chat with players near you. Fire Team - Chat with your Fire Team. (A symbol appears above your head to non-fire team members which indicates that you cannot chat.) Off - You can't hear anyone in-game, nor can they hear you. (A symbol appears above your head to all players which indicates that you cannot chat. This setting would also be activated upon joining an Xbox LIVE party and whatever the similar chat system is called on Playstation consoles.) Orrr Proximity Chat: On/Off, and you can always hear and speak to your Fire Team. Here's another good thread about the topic. Here's an additional feature Coffeenator requested in the comments:
One feature I would add to the prox. chat is a kind of karma system where if someone gest muted by some number of people in a period of time that they are muted in-game for everyone except for players in their fire team if they are in one. Over time their Karma would get better and they would be unmuted until they would get muted enough to go over the threshold again.
Sources: SoloPopo. "Proximity Chat Is Not an Option." Prox chat is retarded, but i won't say no to it as an option for others. I don't wanna hear (probably more then 1/2 the time) some fking gansta little kid talking all sorts of crap nor somebodies loud music or other annoying noises while i explore or whatever im doing. The best would be to have an actual chat and people can totally afford a $10 crap keyboard, its just better all around over prox chat. You don't wanna see the chat window which would barely take space?, just turn it off. It seemed that nobody was using voice chat in strikes during alpha, i didn't hear anyone, i doubt anyone is gonna wear it while running around. Well, neither system will probably ever be put in place which, i dunno what to really say about that when communication should be important in online co-op games(don't compare using a keyboard to a controller for sending messages).

  • If there were a "mute" button in the "interact" menu (when you press R3, RS on XB1 I think) that would be good integration of the pre-existing UI.

            • I see your point. I would prefer all types of chat as optional. Ill be playing alone and would rather my first impression of a guardian be their skill, not their chatter. Some people annoy me when they talk but when I like the way they play I learn to like them. Id prefer not to have it but, again, it should be optional.

            • Some things: Have you played RuneScape? In RuneScape, they have gigantic open markets, where everyone is selling everything. Since there's no voice chat, it's all text. And your screen is exploding with text. There's no way to read it all. Have you played CoD or Halo? There are some hideous trolls. So now combine these: a flood of information, all audio, with little filter, complete with trolls, scammers, actual people, and everything in between. Granted, Bungie's response is rather extreme. But so is yours. I've been musing on this, and I've thought of an idea. Have a set number of podiums or platforms or something, say 20 of these, where anyone can get up and talk. There would be a short list of broad topics to discuss: trading, stories, tactics, etc. There would be a time limit on each speech, like 10 minutes or so. Anyone walking by could stop, listen to whatever anyone speaking at a podium had to say, and leave. Then, people could distribute their messages, but only when people wanted to hear them. Also, I'm guessing that some sort of Destiny vernacular will evolve. In Halo, honking from a vehicle meant "Get in!", and shooting a teammates' vehicle meant "Oy! Wait for me!" I'm guessing something similar will evolve in Destiny.

              • Also, couldn't bungie have added the proximity chat feature in the alpha so that we as gamers could have tested it out and see if we actually liked it or not and then given feedback on wether or not it should be in the full game or dropped?

                • Personally, no. I'll help all you other Guardians as best I can if you are being swarmed by Hive or a Devil Walker out in the Wild, but after that we are going our separate ways. I only want to talk to people I know.

When I was in the alpha no one talked to another not even during a strike and it was just fine but I think it would be a nice option so I say yes

                    • No, the moment you do that you have a rip off MMO and it adds to the realism of the game, are you gona stop and use your radio to communicate with other guardians when you know the second you do that an army of fallen will be at your position, not only that but you would have given away the position of every guardian who used the radio at the time you did....humanity is BACKED AGAINST THE WALL literally! Every day is a struggle to live, so you can bet your ass the enemy is going to do everything they can to make their job a lot easier, and if that means listening in on radio chatter...they'll gladly take the opportunity...so yes, by keeping chat to simple gestures and strictly two or three man chat (which in real life is almost impossible to hack into) players get this sort-of keeping radio silence feel

                        • Even if we had some why to let other know that we want to join a fire team. That would help some kind of icon or something. I was trying invite almost every player I saw and still none would join. :(

I personally would like the ability to swipe on the touch pad to pull up a keyboard, then my message pops up in the left corner by my name just like when we dance and what not. This way it keeps that mystery and so I don't have to manually mute everyone in my fire team or proximity because they annoy me. I can ignore scrolling text easier, also it will allow them to filter curses and such.

                            • They should add an option that appears when you use your ghost, an option to call for assistance, and anyone in the map or area will be notified, or a big symbol will appear above your heap, easily visible of course. This would help a lot when exploring and you come across some difficult enemies

                                • If prox. chat was implemented I'd love the game so much more than I already do! The game would have much more of an MMO feel and it would add a lot more fun to the public events.
