Should Proximity Chat Be Implemented As an Option?

READ BEFORE VOTING Destiny, Bungie’s newest exquisite videogame, is filled with breathtaking visuals and compelling gameplay, and that’s after only playing the Alpha and Beta versions, although there is one major flaw that’s been brought to my attention: Destiny lacks proximity chat, which is the ability to speak with other players whom are near you. Currently, players can wave to each other, dance with each other, and point at things “in a desperate, and futile, attempt at communication” (SoloPopo). Players can’t make new friends, talk about strategies, nor ask for assistance. With proximity chat, players can get to know each other and share their experiences they’ve had in Destiny. Maybe you just want to compliment someone’s awesome armor and be on your way. Players would be able to talk about how they’ll complete an event or where to find some loot. Imagine trying to strategize by pointing everywhere. Players would be able to ask for assistance during combat. Imagine fighting enemies with a few other players, and when you get cornered, all you can do is point at them and dance for your life. Destiny is based on the notion of being always-online and multiplayer. If everyone is a mute, then what is the point? As SoloPopo said, “It's ridiculous, and kills the immersion. Why are other players even in the game if you can't interact with them?” Being able to wave and point is fine if you don’t have a headset plugged in, but it should be optional, because being able to speak is a much better alternative. Proximity chat should be the next feature implemented in Destiny. In GameInformer's interview with Lars Bakken, Bungie's multiplayer lead, Bakken stated "We know that, not just in multiplayer, that in general, when you get into a game with someone that you don't know or someone that you've never seen before and may never see again, they have this power to completely destroy your entire experience and maybe ruin the game for you forever" (Manuch). If another player is being obnoxious and you want to disable proximity chat, you can simply switch between three chat settings: Proximity, Fire Team, and Off. This feature would also require the following settings. Chat Settings: Proximity - Chat with players near you. Fire Team - Chat with your Fire Team. (A symbol appears above your head to non-fire team members which indicates that you cannot chat.) Off - You can't hear anyone in-game, nor can they hear you. (A symbol appears above your head to all players which indicates that you cannot chat. This setting would also be activated upon joining an Xbox LIVE party and whatever the similar chat system is called on Playstation consoles.) Orrr Proximity Chat: On/Off, and you can always hear and speak to your Fire Team. Here's another good thread about the topic. Here's an additional feature Coffeenator requested in the comments:
One feature I would add to the prox. chat is a kind of karma system where if someone gest muted by some number of people in a period of time that they are muted in-game for everyone except for players in their fire team if they are in one. Over time their Karma would get better and they would be unmuted until they would get muted enough to go over the threshold again.
Sources: SoloPopo. "Proximity Chat Is Not an Option." • So how would players be aware when someone has it turned on or not? I mean if I'm exploring for the heck of it, not really looking for a big co-op experience or anything and I turn it off will players see that or get pissy because they think I'm ignoring them?

    • In game chat lobby. BUT... It gotta be done right. You need a lot of options to cater to everyone, and it has to be seamless like the rest of the game, because that's part of the charm of what Destiny is. For example, there has to be options for either auto joining or auto muting regional chat when entering an area. The game itself caters to a lot of different players and playstyles, some will want to socialize and some will not. It's important that both are catered to. The main thing though is you have to be able to play without fiddling with it constantly. Bungie went to great lengths to make this game in a way to keep you immersed in the world. Having a chat lobby that is opposite of that is counter productive to everything they created so far. TL;DR Yes.

    • I don't get why some people don't want it. For Example: If I didn't want... Let's say a HUD, but some other people did want a HUD, and Bungie still put the HUD in, BUT! There was an option to turn it off, I would still be happy! So please people make this a win win for everyone and vote to put it in (with and option to turn it off) so everyone will be happy! :) I hope my example made enough sense...

      • I feel like having proximity chat will in turn increase the level of immersion. Like just imagine running into some guy in the middle of a fight, he's pinned down, alone and running low on ammo. You jump in, start devising a plan, quickly dispatch of the enemy through good communication and teamwork. You both enjoy a little banter, and go your separate ways. Isn't this the basis of the game? Jump into the fray with your fellow guardians and eradicate the darkness. And hey if you don't like someone, mute them. If Destiny has the community I think it does, hopefully there will be a lot of friendly people willing to just help a comrade.

          • Yes, but I think you should be able to switch through chat modes with the right directional button and use the other to access quick menus to switch weapon/skills/ grenades on the fly. and the touch pad for emots.

            • YES! I'm glad this is getting attention! So frustrating not being able to bs with other guardians, in the alpha I set my fire team to public so anyone could just join, I got a few people randomly joining me for a bit but that was all. How are we supposed to approach public event with strategy if we can't talk to the guardians in the event with us? PLEASE BUNGIE we need this bad

I agree. Without an adequate form of communication, the game will not have a flourishing in-game community. The chat modes you suggested are great ideas. Another suggestion: incorporate an app on our phones that we can use to type/voice chat to other players around us.

                  • After playing alpha I would agree with prox chat for out of Fireteam. You should be able to hear your Fireteam from anywhere. But if someone is out of my Fireteam it would be nice to be able to invite them by talking to them instead of shooting them a random invite.

                    • They should add it in and give us the option to see who's talking on the roster and let us mute the people abusing it.

                                • BE AWARE prox chat, and always-on audio chat, is a very serious drain on netcode sources (it causes lag, potentially a lot of it), in fireteams you can set aside bandwidth for the other people in your fireteam, forming a "tight link", that isnt as resource intensive.... think of it like having to start and end a skype call every time a player gets within range or moves out of range. lots of picking up and hanging up.

                                  • I agree that chat should be available between players, but rather than a blanket edit, there should be an option when you press R3 to mute a player who is being obnoxious or harassing. (Harassing should also be able to be reported.) I had a case come up where I found a dead ghost, and tried to get the attention of a couple of other players to lead them to it, but the best I could do was wave and point. Sadly, they did not get the idea of what I was trying to do, and left the area. Make it short range, or point to point chat or messaging. Either that, or give the option to set up commands on the cross pad for "dead ghost here" or something like that to let people communicate a bit better. Granted, that last one may be in place already, as I never did figure out how people were able to salute others, but saw several players do so.

I also feel that if I can render a player and see them in-game I should either know that I can talk to them or be able to tell how close I need to be to talk to them.

To those that think the Alpha went pretty well even without coms, remember that those playing the Alpha are mostly guys eager to play the game, learn it and do well. Of course we revive each other and spread out so we can flank and so on. So yeah, we can pull it off muted. When Sep. comes and everyone and his dog starts playing this game, it will be different. And you'll have endless situations where you'll want to guide and help the guys playing beside you but.. ops, you can't talk to them. edit: @op - prox and fireteam shouldn't be mutually exclusive. You should leave fireteam as it is. Then add prox chat enabled by default and the user can go into settings and turn it off and no more prox chat for him. When you get close to an avatar, there should be an icon somewhere to tell you that he can hear you and talk back (meaning he has a headset and has the prox chat enabled). Then, even with the chat enabled, there should be an option to mute specific players.
