Should Proximity Chat Be Implemented As an Option?

READ BEFORE VOTING Destiny, Bungie’s newest exquisite videogame, is filled with breathtaking visuals and compelling gameplay, and that’s after only playing the Alpha and Beta versions, although there is one major flaw that’s been brought to my attention: Destiny lacks proximity chat, which is the ability to speak with other players whom are near you. Currently, players can wave to each other, dance with each other, and point at things “in a desperate, and futile, attempt at communication” (SoloPopo). Players can’t make new friends, talk about strategies, nor ask for assistance. With proximity chat, players can get to know each other and share their experiences they’ve had in Destiny. Maybe you just want to compliment someone’s awesome armor and be on your way. Players would be able to talk about how they’ll complete an event or where to find some loot. Imagine trying to strategize by pointing everywhere. Players would be able to ask for assistance during combat. Imagine fighting enemies with a few other players, and when you get cornered, all you can do is point at them and dance for your life. Destiny is based on the notion of being always-online and multiplayer. If everyone is a mute, then what is the point? As SoloPopo said, “It's ridiculous, and kills the immersion. Why are other players even in the game if you can't interact with them?” Being able to wave and point is fine if you don’t have a headset plugged in, but it should be optional, because being able to speak is a much better alternative. Proximity chat should be the next feature implemented in Destiny. In GameInformer's interview with Lars Bakken, Bungie's multiplayer lead, Bakken stated "We know that, not just in multiplayer, that in general, when you get into a game with someone that you don't know or someone that you've never seen before and may never see again, they have this power to completely destroy your entire experience and maybe ruin the game for you forever" (Manuch). If another player is being obnoxious and you want to disable proximity chat, you can simply switch between three chat settings: Proximity, Fire Team, and Off. This feature would also require the following settings. Chat Settings: Proximity - Chat with players near you. Fire Team - Chat with your Fire Team. (A symbol appears above your head to non-fire team members which indicates that you cannot chat.) Off - You can't hear anyone in-game, nor can they hear you. (A symbol appears above your head to all players which indicates that you cannot chat. This setting would also be activated upon joining an Xbox LIVE party and whatever the similar chat system is called on Playstation consoles.) Orrr Proximity Chat: On/Off, and you can always hear and speak to your Fire Team. Here's another good thread about the topic. Here's an additional feature Coffeenator requested in the comments:
One feature I would add to the prox. chat is a kind of karma system where if someone gest muted by some number of people in a period of time that they are muted in-game for everyone except for players in their fire team if they are in one. Over time their Karma would get better and they would be unmuted until they would get muted enough to go over the threshold again.
Sources: SoloPopo. "Proximity Chat Is Not an Option." • I agree completely, unlike other games where you meet people out and about (mostly PC) we don't have a keyboard or area chat. This is a brilliant idea and solution to what might make exploring boring as well as serve to help find other like minded players.

over 1000 yes votes to less than 200 no votes, looks like a landslide victory. What are the odds of bungie actually listening to the fans though?

This deserves more attention then split screen. Only reason split screen has attention is because the creater is persistent as -blam!- lol

            • If bungie can easily implement it I would be all for it, just as long as there is an option to just have everyone muted in proxy chat and have a solid on off switch so that I don't have to constantly mite people yelling penis.

                • I have to agree, as long as proximity still includes full party/fireteam chat so i don't loose contact with my buddies because i decided to split off and pull some solo player out of a jam (like others have said), and as long as there is an easy way to find and mute players who are causing problems (also like others have said). The option to turn if off, by the way, i think is a really selling point for this idea as I can definitely see why some people would just not want to bother, particularly if mic trolling becomes a wide spread problem. That said, Im afraid that we will end up with the same problem I have with every other game (on xbox), where people just don't plug their mic in period. Not sure how it is on PSN, but that is becoming a major problem on XBL, and I end up not plugging in my mic most of the time either because it seems there is no point anymore.

                  • YES, we need this. otherwise you have to party chat invite someone or run up to them hold O and then click (OPTIONS) and choose invite to fire team and on the off chance they say yes THEN you can talk to them. it would be nice to be roaming on a sparrow see a level 5 struggling to fight off some fallen and simply ask "hey need help", when he says yes you kill the fallen and can be on your way or join into a fireteam

                      • I feel like proximity chat would be an awesome feature, as long as you're out in the world exploring an can still talk to your fireteam the whole time. If you and your fireteam are split up across the map, and I run into one person, it should just be me that hears them, same goes for everyone in the fireteam. (Lol called proximity chat for a reason)

I think they need to have it on. Especially if raids are taking over 45 minutes to get through, like they're speculating. Sure, you'll get idiots with kids crying or that guy that plays his music too loudly, but I'd rather mute them than not meet people or lose out on strategy or not have it at all.

                              • I would like to see the following: Default no proximity chat (to eliminate trolling, douchery ect.) If two guardians wave to each other that opens proximity chat and it activates some option to join in a fire team together. (Symbol above head as suggested, or something on the d-pad. But linking needs to be easier) In MP default team chat.

                                • Proxy chat should absolutely be an option. Those that don't want it can just turn it off, but the poll shows the large majority would like the option. If Bungie's vision was to have a silent game, and they still feel that way after this poll, then set the proximity chat default to "off." The rest of us can switch proximity chat to "on" and enjoy the game even more. Options are never a bad thing.

                                  • Since the game is always online you are always interacting with other people, so yeah this would be a great idea. Hearing someone scream in the distance or shouting wild cuss words when they meet a high-level enemy would be pretty awesome too :D.

                                    • Although I agree that proximity chat should be in the game you can always send a private chat to people because most everyone is in private chats all the time anyway. Really in any game you to make new friends you have to invite people to a private chat.

                                      • Communication is essential in a game like Destiny. If I can't communicate with people in a public event it will make things more difficult for everyone.

                                          • Without the proximity chat feature what would be the point of having all types of random people be able to meet in the tower area of the game? I mean during the alpha experience tons of random different players were all in the tower area at the same time, but why allow this function if you don't have a tool for communication with those players. It just seems like a weird thing that bungie did.

I could not test it because at that time, I didn't see other players. Could be that voice chat is only allowed between squad members, but that wouldn't be a problem.

I mean if I'm exploring for the heck of it, not really looking for a big co-op experience or anything and I turn it off will players see that or get pissy because they think I'm ignoring them?
