Destiny Alpha Opnions (Only a hour or two in)

So, I thought since I'm not sure where to post it and presumably Bungie reads this forum, I've give me thoughts about the Destiny Alpha. This is only going to be short but I may update it later. The Good: Solid Gunplay and action. The AI are intelligent so it makes for a good fight, the guns feel weighty and powerful, all in all solid Systems of gear and leveling are good and fun when you learn them. The bad and what to do about it: I'd say the game needs a better tutorial. Now I've slept since I started, but I'm pretty sure at the beginning the game did not even tell you how to fire. We all know how to do so having played shooters before, but what about the person who never has and gets eaten up by Fallen? Even if it DID it does not explains the myriad of things about The Tower, what strikes or PVP are ETC. Now, to all of US who know games like this well that is no issue, but Destiny is a new IP and as such some people may not have played shooters before and would be jumping into this blind. Such people need direction especially if this is their first shooter. However it's also important to not patronize the players who don't want it or have played shooters before. Suggestion: make a better tutorial covering things like leveling, what to do in menus, ETC. Second, MAKE IT OPTIONAL for those of us who want to figure it out, or do what you do already and just have it pop up mid combat or shopping. Third, make it readable in the options menu in case you forget something. That's all I have for now, when I play more I will add more.

  • I was gonna say the same thing as Ryouii Gunblade - the holding down buttons in general takes too long for me. Deploying your ghost to open a closed doorway makes me press the button for 5 seconds while nothing happens on screen when finally, after this button pressing the ghost emerges. It should have a spawning animation during this "waiting time". The one big thing I'm going to complain about tho is sidemissions. They don't feel rewarding at all. So I find a message from a fellow guardian in the tower - sitting on his lazy butt. I battle myself through a heap of enemies and don't hear another word from that guy. After I complete the mission all I get is some lousy amount of EXP and a dull one-liner from my ghost giving me a thumbs up - and thats it? Hmmm... I'd like to at least get some loot. I'd be happy with materials, heck even glimmer - it would make me feel like i got something out of it. I see myself doing 5, maybe 10 of those missions and then become bored of them already. A cool addition to this would be some background info on those missions. For example: In one mission you have to retrieve aerospace data from the golden age (which is fine for me - it sounds like a cool mission). So all you have to do is go to an airplane, scan some random stuff you know nothing about - and that's it. Your ghost says "Good job!" and 5 minutes later you won't even remember which airplane you went to. Now I know that having a guy talk to you for 5 minutes after you find that mission log would be pretty annoying and I wouldn't want that. You could compensate that with a chunk of text that comes with the mission - it could be displayed next to the mission objectives when you summon your ghost. Not a biggie in my opinion. Now for the background story part: I'm still going to continue with this aerospace data quest as an example of what it could look like. ___________________________________ Name of the guy who wants you to do this Fellow guardian, recon suggests there might be some intel leftovers from the golden age stored in a nearby vessel. This aerospace data could help us find new and longforgotten relics and would be a big step towards our former glory. Go and scan through the ruins of the Mothyard if you accept this mission - you shall be rewarded for your bravery. ___________________________________ It's not much, but it makes it feel like it's more of an important task. And for those who don't like this kind of stuff - they don't have to read it and it's not too big and up in their face. I'm a story person, but tastes differ and I know that. Geee, I hope somebody actually reads this. Haha -Lagg

  • As others have noted the game so far has been very polished. I did encounter a one oddity when playing the game in the free roam mode though (I forget the region though as I think I missed the name): while fighting through enemies they started in the range of level 7-9, then I entered a building where the enemies were all level 4, and go down a tunnel inside this building to promptly get crushed by " level ??" enemies. As far as I could tell the only entrance to the building was through the level 7-9 enemies, so it seemed like an odd progression.

    • Haha, it's not the first mission in the full game. And I imagine most who signed up have been following the game

    • My guess is that with this being the alpha, kinda booted you along a little instead of starting at the very beginning not to give away story plots and such which my guess would be similar to other games, in which the the beginning of the story is the tutorial.

      • No, don't even complain about tutorials until you've played dark souls one and two. They explain maybe ten percent of the actual game in those, and if people can make it in those they can make it in destiny. Besides learning all of that is part of the fun.

      • For an alpha, this game is pretty polished already. I only have 2 minor complaints. Holding a button to go to orbit takes a tad too long and Devil Walkers are giant annoying meatshields.
