Destiny isn't a long-running franchise that people will easily get hyped for.
Destiny isn't a game like Titanfall that is easy to understand and instantly appeals to the average gamer.
Therefore, Destiny isn't going to start its marketing campaign until E3, because if it's too early no one will care.
Don't worry, I'm pretty sure Destiny will be doing a couple hundred million dollars of marketing. They're just saving it for the summer, when it's early enough that many people will notice (E3 and the beta will help) but late enough that the people don't have to patiently follow it for years like us :/

Agreed, if you ask people about CoD or Halo I imagine most people will at least know that it is a game.
